Judy Barton (she/her)

Program Coordinator - Thunder Bay

Intro

I have been at the college in the Academic Upgrading since 2002.  I taught full time as a Communications professor from 2002 until 2012.  Since 2012, I have been the Coordinator of the Academic Upgrading/ACE Program.

How/Why I Become a Teacher

I have always know what a difference a good teacher could make in someone’s life.  I was a painfully shy child, and I have such a clear memory of the teachers who made me feel overwhelmed and uncomfortable, and the ones who “got” me and helped me come out of my shell.  I channel those teachers every day and try always to make students feel the way those teachers made me feel.

I also believe deeply in the power of education to transform lives. In Academic Upgrading we see transformation every day: students becoming more confident, learning how to advocate for themselves, meeting goals, experiencing success, moving forward.

What I Like Most About Teaching

Meeting students where they’re at.  Teaching them but also learning from them.  Adult students have so much life experience—I always feel lucky to share time with them.

My insight or words of advice regarding this program

Don’t spend any more time thinking “I’m too old for this program” or “I’m not smart enough” or “I should have finished high school when I had the chance”.  None of these are true.  Seriously. Thinking thoughts like those just bring you down, and they mean that you never try.

My advice?  Just try!

We have people of all ages, all backgrounds. Everyone is welcome, and we will work really hard to help you have a good experience.
