Welcome Joel Scherban

I am pleased to announce that Joel Scherban has accepted the position of Project Manager and has joined the Finance and Administration department on November 21, 2022.

Joel was born and raised in Thunder Bay and has extensive experience working in public sector, primarily in the health care sector but most recently in the postsecondary sector as a Project Supervisor for the $10 million SAO Healthcare Initiative.  For nearly eight years he held project management, and performance funding and contract management roles at the North West Local Health Integration Network, now Ontario Health North. In these roles Joel managed performance of a portfolio of over 30 health service providers who received over $90 million in combined annual funding at the individual organization, sub-region, and system levels both in the hospital and community sectors to achieve desired outcomes.  His experience also includes being a Research Business Analyst, developing strategic and operating plans as well as helping to secure approximately $45 million in seed funding for healthcare research through the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute, the research arm of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Joel holds degrees in Master of Science in Management (MSc.MGt.) and Honours Bachelor of Commerce (HBCom) from Lakehead University and is currently enrolled in a Harvard University School of Business program with a goal of earning a Certificate of Specialization in Leadership and Management.  He learned what discipline and hard work was at a young age through his career in the Ontario Hockey League and as a draft pick for the NHL (Pittsburg Penguins).  He is well known for spending three and a half years as the Manager and Head Coach of Lakehead University’s Men’s hockey team.
