Geraldine Kakeeway, Student Success Advisor, Lake of the Woods/Red Lake Campuses, is a member of the Lake of the Woods Museum Indigenous Advisory Committee.

The committee, along with other community partners, planned and organized “Shiibahka’igan – Honouring the Sacred Jingle Dress” which ran from July to October 2019.  Recently, the Museum and partners, were recognized by the Ontario Historical Society with the OHS Indigenous History Award for this exhibit.

Leanna Marshall, Indigenous Counsellor in Negahneewin Student Services, was a contributing artist to the committee, and several of her works were part of the exhibit.

You can see the OHS press release and the YouTube video of the committee's “Miigwech” to OHS for recognizing the work of the committee.

Exhibits like this are powerful for the students that we serve. They see themselves and their relatives in the powerful images and stories. The jingle dress is very very powerful and when people connect to that dress, one knows that healing is happening.

A catalogue was created to go hand-in-hand with this exhibit. It is beautiful and full of teachings and wonderful stories.

Congratulations to Geraldine, Leanna and the Lake of the Woods Museum Indigenous Advisory Committee for receiving this prestigious award!
