Shoal Lake #40 First Nation, a community in the Kenora District, approached Confederation College’s Contract Training department to develop an entry level program to build the skills within its own people to support the housing needs of the community.

Working collaboratively with the First Nation, we developed a custom course to build skills in multiple areas of home renovation and safety. Our Introduction to Home Renovation program provided participants with hands-on learning in tool safety, general carpentry, window installation, drywall repair/installation, insulation/vapor barrier, siding, roof repairs, and basic electrical.

Students demonstrated their new skills by building two community ice fishing huts, complete with metal roof, vinyl siding, windows, door, lights, and a solar panel system. This allowed students to practice common building competencies on a smaller scale. The final two weeks of the program involved home renovations throughout the community that would put these skills to real life scenarios.

8 students received a Recognition of Achievement Certificate for successfully completing the program.

“It is quite humbling to be involved in community programs of this importance. This program was custom, community based, and most importantly – impactful.”

-Nick Iachetta, Program Manager
