We are pleased to announce that we have created a partnership with the Thunder Bay Police Service that centers around building community relationships and helping students. The Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS) has been allocated an office in our Shuniah Building at the Thunder Bay campus, giving officers the opportunity to catch up on reports and do interviews. This office space is located on the main floor near the Reach Atrium room 178a. The aim of this partnership is to allow students and members of the TBPS to engage in a positive way.

Students can talk to officers from the Primary Response and Community Outreach Branches concerning any issues they may have. The TBPS hope to develop a positive relationship with all students on campus including our Indigenous and International students. It is also an opportunity for students in our Police Foundations program to have access to on-the-job police officers.

“Police working to build up lasting relationships of trust must begin early with youth and young adults,” stated Derek West, Inspector of the Thunder Bay Police Service’s Community Outreach Branch. “Being connected to students at Confederation College reduces the fear many [students] may have about the police. The connections made now can translate into a safer community and in some cases allow students to consider a career in law enforcement. Our presence at the college will allow us to be accessible for positive relationships to develop.”

This collaboration between Confederation College and the Thunder Bay Police Service is a key part of the Safe Campus program. It is meant to promote a secure and inviting environment for both international and domestic students, as well as encourage partnership between the two organizations.

If you see police officers on campus, please know that you are able to approach them and speak with them, they are here to be a resource.
