Confederation College Contributes Over $43,000 to its Students, Stock the Bank and Other Community Charities

THUNDER BAY, ON, December 13, 2021 – Through donations, product sales and department competitions, the students and employees of Confederation College have raised $43,457 in support of its students and community charities. The “Stock the Bank” internal campaign supports the Emergency Student Fund, Food Bank, community charities and other school initiatives at the College.

“Every year, I am humbled by the generosity of our employees and students during this campaign,” said Kathleen Lynch, Confederation College President. “The pandemic has taken a significant toll on many of our students, their families, and the community, which is why it is especially important that our College came together this year to support those in need.”

The total amount raised includes $34,754 to support Confederation College initiatives and other community charities and $15,406 to “Stock the Bank” in support of the College’s Emergency Student Fund, which includes the Food Bank. Nearly 8000 food items were collected to fill the shelves of the College’s Food Bank for students in need. Over the past 15 years, “Stock the Bank” has seen a total contribution of $198,020 and over 80,000 food items to the Emergency Student Fund/Food Bank.

"It is because of community like ours that we are able to prevent and reduce hunger," said Ronnie Kasana, Student Union President. "These donations will make a positive difference in the College community for students as it will help eliminate food insecurity for families in crisis. We are so grateful for the support."

Employee donations of up to three hours’ pay and a friendly fundraising/food collection competition between departments also played an important role in the final numbers for this year’s event. This year’s winning departments, which are each allotted $150 to give to their charity of choice, include:

Large Team Category: Student Success, Apiwin, Health Services & SUCCI, which donated their prize to the Lakehead Social Planning Council Care Bus;
Small Team Category: Facility Services & Reliable Cleaners, Public Safety & Campus Living Centers, which donated their prize to Shelter House; and,
Academic Category: Schools of Engineering, Technology, Trades & Aviation, which donated their prize to the Lakehead Social Planning Council Care Bus.
