Eighteen students crossed the floor yesterday to receive their Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) Certificate—an Ontario Grade 12 equivalency—during Confederation College’s annual Academic Upgrading Recognition Ceremony. They were among 192 learners celebrated for completing at least one upgrading course over the past year.

The Academic Upgrading program helps individuals strengthen their academic skills in areas such as math, communications, science and self-management, creating clear pathways into post-secondary education, employment, or apprenticeship. This year, 147 Academic Upgrading students have already transitioned into Confederation College programs.

“This event is a celebration of resilience and growth,” said Michelle Salo, President of Confederation College. “Our Academic Upgrading learners come from diverse backgrounds and bring a strong sense of purpose to their studies. We’re proud to support their journeys as they pursue their goals and take the next steps toward brighter futures.”

The program continues to serve a broad range of students—this year, 874 individuals accessed Academic Upgrading at the College across Thunder Bay, North Shore and Greenstone campuses. Learners have ranged in age from 17 to 84, with many returning to school after years away.

One of this year’s graduates, Elsie McKay, shared her journey during the ceremony. After earning a Grade 12 diploma at the Locally Developed Level in high school, Elsie knew she wanted more. As a single parent, she returned to school through Academic Upgrading, working hard to rebuild her confidence and skills. She went on to graduate from the Community Integration through Co-operative Education (CICE) program and recently completed her ACE Certificate.

“It’s never too late to return to school,” said McKay. “Even if you’re a single parent, it can be difficult—but there’s support. Even if you have a learning disability, there are people to help you.” Elsie will begin Confederation’s Office Administration program this fall.

The Academic Upgrading program offers a flexible, student-focused format with personalized support from dedicated faculty. Whether students are preparing for college, employment, or apprenticeship or simply improving their skills, the program offers a welcoming environment and a path forward.
