CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF STOCK THE BANK

History of the Stock the Bank Challenge

For nearly two decades, SUCCI has proudly spearheaded the Stock the Bank food and fundraising campaign in support of the Emergency Student Foodbank.

Launched in 2006, Stock the Bank began at a time when the college food bank shelves were seriously depleted. What started as a friendly inter-departmental challenge quickly grew into one of the most meaningful annual acts of collective care on our campus.

Thanks to the generosity of our college community and the ongoing support of staff and departments, this campaign has, over the past 19 years, raised more than $250,000 and collected over 12,000 non-perishable food items for students in need. These donations have helped keep food bank shelves stocked year after year and ensured students facing food insecurity were not alone.

Departments are divided into teams and compete to see who can contribute the most. Food items and monetary donations are valued equally, one point for one item or dollar, keeping the challenge accessible and inclusive for all.

As we celebrate this milestone year, we honour the tradition, creativity, and generosity that have made Stock the Bank a cornerstone of campus compassion for 20 years, while continuing to find new ways to support students when they need it most.

STUDENT EMERGENCY FUND

We know that student need extends beyond access to food alone. Students are often faced with unforeseen emergencies that can threaten their ability to continue their studies. Some of these situations fall outside the scope of existing loans, bursaries, or traditional supports.

In 2017, SUCCI established the Student Emergency Fund. This fund continues to support the Emergency Student Foodbank and also allows funds to be set aside for students who present to Financial Aid with urgent needs but may not qualify for existing emergency funding.

During the pandemic, the Student Emergency Fund was merged with the COVID-19 Emergency Fund to provide broader and more flexible student support.

Examples of emergency situations supported include:

• Health issues not covered by insurance
• Complicated pregnancy requiring out-of-town medical care
• Death of a family member and unexpected travel costs
• Vehicle expenses following accidents for students outside transit zones
• Emergency housing needs or having to move out of home
• Mental health crises
• Relationship breakdowns and relocation costs

Since its inception in 2017, over $160,000 has been awarded to students to support their continued education.

Departments may run fundraisers in support of their Stock the Bank efforts.

Some restrictions apply:
Hot food requires Food Safety certification.
Raffles are not permitted, but candy sales are allowed.

Questions? Chat with Thomas.

Teams are encouraged to fundraise throughout the year rather than relying solely on the collection period.

Each donation earns 250 points per team, with a minimum $50 amount.

Donations are worth 5 points per dollar

Donation caps:
Large & Academic Teams: $1,500
Small Teams: $1000

Additional donations above these caps are welcome but will count at one point per dollar.

Deadline: Thursday, February 26 at 4:00 pm

INCENTIVES:

On top of the best bragging rights of the year, the top collection teams (large and small and academic) have the opportunity to each win a $150 donation to the charity of your department’s choice!   Charity of Choice must be submitted to [email protected] by Wednesday February 25th, 2025. And, let’s not forget about the Dollarama Frame with the Snazzy Certificate Printed by SUCCI to hang in your office!

It’s the least we can do in this season of giving. All participating departments will receive a thank you at our Wrap Up Event in the Shuniah Student Lounge on March 2nd.  Awards for winning teams will be recognized during that time, as well as a chance to come together as a community and celebrate all the good we can do in our community.

AS A TEAM CAPTAIN:
Your role is to motivate your team, liaise with other Captains on your team, spread the word of Campaign/Challenge and come up with a strategy.

  • Put your donation basket in a prominent place in your office

  • Keep the competition on the minds and in the hearts of your team mates

  • Fill up your donation box and organize fundraisers

  • Check your email and Staff News for your stats and share to motivate support

  • Beat the other teams (we know how competitive you are!)

  • We thank you in advance for your generous participation

THANK YOU FOR COMING ALONG FOR THIS EXCITING JOURNEY IN SUPPORT OF OUR STUDENTS!
