How to Get Around Town

As a student who’s new to Thunder Bay you may be wondering how best to move around the city.

Bus

  • As a Confederation College student, you have unlimited access to Thunder Bay’s bus network through U-Pass (Universal Bus Pass). Confederation College is a transportation hub which connects many of the cities bus routes, making your bus pass a great way to travel long distances around the city quickly.
  • In order to plan your route you can check out the bus routes and schedules here.
  • You can also use Google Maps to help you navigate to your destination. When selecting “public transit” after inputting your destination, you’ll receive up-to-date information on which lines to take to your destination, arrival times and delays.

Bicycle

  • Confederation College is also directly connected to Thunder Bay’s multi-use trail system. These trails, alongside the city’s many bicycle lanes and sidewalks, can be used to quickly and safely traverse the city by bicycle or on foot.
  • You can store your bike for free at any one of the many bike racks by building entrances. For an annual fee of $15 you can park your bike in the Bike Locker.
  • Bike tools for repairs and maintenance are available on campus, located under the overhang outside the Wellness Centre and can be accessed at anytime for free.
  • Bicycle and walking routes are always getting upgraded and the most recent map can be found here. Google Maps can also be used to help you navigate the city by bike or foot via the multi-use trails by selecting the bike or walking options respectively!

Car

  • Though each form of transportation has its pros and cons, consider these forms of transport before purchasing or leasing a car. Costs of car ownership can quickly add up and total more than 1000 dollars a month in Canada. This is on top of the environmental and social costs of car infrastructure, increased emissions and health costs. If you do choose to drive, try to carpool where possible and avoid idling to help reduce your costs and impact.

As a bonus, if you’re already commuting car-free, or want to try it out, keep an eye out for commute challenges like the Active Commute Challenge. These challenges are a great way to meet other commuters and to win prizes for your efforts!
