Engineering Business and Safety Management Courses

This course is designed to prepare students to successfully write the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) Professional Practice Examination (PPE), required for certification for engineering technicians and technologists by this professional certifying body. The basics of the association's structure, contract law, ethics, and professional practice will be examined. The student assessment will include practice examinations similar to OACETT's PPE.

In this course, students will develop managerial skills to propose, plan, secure resources, budget, and lead project teams to successful completion of projects. Students will also learn why organizations have developed a formal project management process supported by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and its Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) to gain a competitive advantage. The case study approach will be used along with an investigation of software and collaboration tools that aid in carrying out activities of project planning and project execution.

This course will introduce students to the purpose and history of occupational health and safety including accident causation and prevention and proactive health and safety maintenance techniques. Legislation governing occupational health and safety and Workers' Compensation are explained. The interrelationship between occupational health, employment, absenteeism, illness, and the concerns of labour management will be examined. Students will also consider the leadership role of HR professionals in occupational health and safety.

In today's globalized world, organizations of all sizes and types trade products and services across national borders. In this course, students will gain an understanding of how to manage the movement of products and services internationally, the current trends and practices in logistics and managing global supply chains, and the role of supply chain management in promoting ethical, responsible and sustainable business practices.

Engaging in international business activities typically requires changes in human resources strategies, policies and practices to ensure employee and organizational success. In this course, students will examine how to manage human resources in an international context in key activities including recruitment, training and development, compensation and benefits, and performance management. Students will also explore the role of human resources management in promoting ethical, responsible and sustainable business practices.

In this course, students will understand barriers to intercultural communication, assess cultural differences, and apply strategies to communicate effectively with colleagues and clients from other cultures. Students will apply principles of plain language to communicate effectively to diverse audiences using a variety of communication channels. They will apply research strategies to evaluate sources of information and will apply APA standards of documentation and style to academic work. Students will analyse audience and purpose to create business correspondence using the direct approach.

Operations Management is responsible for all the activities that create value by transforming inputs to outputs. Operation managers play a key role in orchestrating the resources required to produce the final product. This course introduces the critical part of an organization that is responsible for key activities such as product design, resource allocation, scheduling, equipment and facilities, location strategy, job design and work measurement. The concepts of operations management are discussed and applied to current issues arising in today’s manufacturing industry.

This course will provide students with an introduction to the history of colonization of Indigenous communities in Canada. Contemporary Indigenous community issues within Northwestern Ontario (NWO) and Canada will be examined. Students will explore the unique socio-political relationships between Canada and Indigenous peoples with an emphasis on colonial, legal and political issues. With a broader understanding of the context of colonization, students will analyze contemporary relationships and efforts towards renewed relationships and reconciliation.

This course is offered to business majors. This course gives you an overview of the financial reporting process. It concentrates on the recording process and the production of financial statements. The course introduces simple tools to allow you to analyze financial information and explain the information contained in the financial statements in your future roles as managers, investors, or other users of financial accounting information.

The field of organizational behaviour examines human behaviour in organizations. Students will assess the impacts of human behaviour on organizational performance through the study of personal values and perceptions, motivational techniques, effective utilization of teamwork, conflict resolution options, negotiation processes, leadership styles, approaches to decision making, options for organizational structure, and change management. They will be able to predict potential impacts of human resources policies and practices on employee behaviour as well as recommend management practices to effectively address specific employee behaviours.

This course will introduce the student to the concepts of quality control and quality assurance in the workplace.

This course builds on the foundation of GB501 Project Management course offered in semester 1. Students will apply their textbook knowledge in project management to recognize relevant project management principles and methodologies within the provided case studies in class on a weekly basis. The further development and understanding of fundamental project management principles and tools will be examined through application and implementation of the learned textbook knowledge in real life scenarios and challenges. Analytical thought process will be emphasized with case studies through group discussions in class. This is a highly interactive course where students will be required to discuss weekly topics and share their opinions on the matters among groups. Supporting lecture slides will be based on the prerequisite GB501 course resources and textbook as well as additional various sources as required provided by the instructor.

This course emphasizes the importance of oral and written communication in an industrial and business setting. In Communications for Technology, students will work on independent and group projects and apply problem-solving techniques to develop both their individual and team building skills. Students will apply computer-technology and a variety of resources for researching, writing and presenting technical data into a clear and concise format.

All projects are unique and incorporate innovative endeavours that can produce new products or processes in all industries. Project viability is the key to longevity for any organization and contributes towards a sound and safe operation in parallel with profitability. This course will focus on the principles and techniques of cost and contract management commonly used by project managers. Students will learn how to evaluate the financial soundness of a project, understand the elements of risk management planning, cost estimation and cost management techniques, scheduling, legal protocols and other intricacies of procurement management.

Occupational health and safety is an area of ongoing concern for all kinds of organizations. Health and safety awareness, prevention and training, dominates all aspects of work from head office to various job sites within engineering, construction, architectural and industrial firms. This course will primarily focus on providing practical knowledge and simulated guidance in regards to health and safety, Joint Occupational Health and Safety committee training, workplace inspection, accident prevention and emergency planning, incident investigation, and understanding due diligence from the perspective of a manager/supervisor position. This course will also highlight worker safety and relevant real world safety policies and regulations as well as document procedures specifically related to working in Canada.

In this course, students will be introduced to the expectations of the Canadian workforce in their upcoming work placement. The course will delve into the importance of confidentiality in the workplace and various career skills, including the soft skills of communication, intercultural consideration, indigenous awareness, adaptability, work ethic, and interpersonal skills, including workplace conflict resolution techniques.

In this course, students will develop an overall understanding of sustainable engineering practices which are commonly used in industrial and commercial applications related to green facilities. Students will examine a wide range of sustainability factors that are associated with LEED certification along with other sustainability programs, certifications, codes, and organizations. This course is designed to demonstrate how to achieve sustainability through focused attention on reduced energy consumption, enhanced equipment efficiency, consistent maintenance, achieving indoor health and thermal comfort, reduced consumption of utilities, renewable energy, on-site energy generation, green power, water conservation, and operational best practices regarding building features such as lighting, insulation, air infiltration, landscaping, shading, and roofing.

This course introduces students to the principles and techniques of quality control and quality assurance. It will use the basics of probability and statistics to gain an understanding into the intricacies of data and sampling and the use of control charts. The course will make significant use of spreadsheet software to track, analyze and present quality related data.

Effective business professionals not only have good communication and negotiation skills, they understand that different cultures often interact in very different ways. In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of negotiation, developing the knowledge and skills to negotiate deals, resolve disputes and make team decisions across cultural boundaries. Students will expand their understanding of what culture is, and why being able to anticipate and adapt to cultural differences matters in the global business environment. The course includes a series of simulated negotiations to hone students’ cross-cultural communication and negotiation skills.

This 14-week work placement, with a private or public sector establishment, will provide the student with the opportunity to apply his/her theoretical knowledge and skills to the practical workplace. Students will be required to contribute to an online discussion group during placement, respond to questions posed and to share workplace experiences through a midterm report and a final report.

This course is designed to help the student develop career preparation skills and professional relationships. This course provides tools and techniques designed to enhance personal communication styles, while challenging students to step outside their comfort zone to adapt to the needs of a virtual world through developing persuasive and motivating messages to lead a professional career upon graduation. They will research industry trends and market needs and develop their abilities to connect with people in their industries to secure employment opportunities. In this course, students will be exposed to mock interviews to better prepare them for the future. Additionally, they will engage in developing targeted resumes, polished cover letters and professional social media profiles. Overall, students will explore their suitable career options and continue to work on their own personal brand.
