Youth Bring Bikes Back to Life at Build Your Ride Workshop

There’s something special about fixing up a worn out bike with your own two hands. Last week, a group of local youth discovered that firsthand at Confederation College’s Build Your Ride: Bike Workshop, part of the College’s Career Samplers series.
With guidance from Ian Cameron of Community Spokes, participants selected well-loved bikes from a broken bike pile. Then they got to work, learning how to use wrenches, Allen keys, and chain breakers, as well as how to straighten wheels and replace brakes, all while problem-solving along the way. For many of the youth, it wasn’t just about repairing a bike, but also building confidence, learning patience, and seeing what they could accomplish in a few short days, with the right tools and encouragement.
“We’re just having fun building bikes, going on rides, talking about bike culture and learning how to keep bikes rolling,” said Cameron. “These are skills they’ll use for the rest of their lives, and it’s amazing to see their excitement as they figure things out.”
Between tightening chains and cleaning away rust, there was laughter, small victories, and a sense of community throughout the week.
Build Your Ride is just one of the many Career Samplers that provide youth (ages 11-15) with opportunities to explore trades, technology, and the arts through hands-on learning in a supportive environment. These camps are designed to spark curiosity and help students discover what they love to do.
