Confederation College’s New Pharmacy Technician Program to Launch September 2024

Thunder Bay, ON, November 1, 2023 Confederation College is pleased to announce the launch of the Pharmacy Technician program that will begin in September of 2024.  Building on the college's successful healthcare programs, the new program will help to address a shortage of Pharmacy Technicians needed across the health care sectors of northwestern Ontario.

The two-year diploma program will accept 30 students to enter the first semester of the program in September of 2024.  The college is accepting applications now at: insert link to OCAS site. 

These students will benefit from a comprehensive curriculum that combines classroom and experiential learning. Students will have access to state-of-the-art simulation labs and health industry standard equipment, ensuring they develop the necessary skills and knowledge to provide quality care.

"The new Pharmacy Technician program represents a significant milestone for Confederation College, Thunder Bay, and northwestern Ontario," says Shane Strickland, Dean of the School of Health, Negahneewin, & Community Services. "By offering this priority program we are providing students with an exceptional education while also supporting the region's workforce needs and helping to address the shortfall of Pharmacy Technicians in the area."

The program places a strong emphasis on community, long-term care, and hospital based experiential learning. Students will engage in simulation and scenarios, preparing them for a rewarding career as Pharmacy Technicians. Beginning in semester one, students will have the opportunity to explore various roles through lab learning, access cutting-edge facilities, and participate in real-world placement settings.

Upon graduation, students will be eligible to become registered with the Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP) to practice as Pharmacy Technicians. Graduates will also have the option to practice in a variety of health care settings to further enhance their career prospects.
