In this course, students will gain a thorough understanding of user interface design based on user-centred design principles and heuristics. Building on the basics learned in the first year, students will be introduced to principles, patterns, and best practices for creating engaging user interfaces and experiences for websites and mobile applications in a variety of screen sizes. Assignments will follow an iterative approach, beginning with research and documentation that includes market and design trends and end-user research. This is followed by wireframing, interface design mock-ups, critique, and final compositions. By the end of the course, students will have developed the skills necessary to design visually appealing and fully-functional user interface prototypes for a variety of applications and users.
Experience working with Real-Time 3D Game Engines, such as Unreal and Unity, is now more valuable than ever for a growing number of industry applications. Beyond video game development, interactive 3D design and development skills are growing in importance for many fields, from architecture and engineering, to medical care, education and film production, as well as marketing and e-commerce. This is being driven by rapid growth in the graphics capabilities of computers, devices and 3D software, as well as the emergence of immersive 3D platforms for virtual reality and augmented reality. Employers and clients in the interactive media industry are unlocking the potential of these real-time 3D tools to entertain, educate and improve lives. Throughout the semester, students will explore methods for creating game-like experiences for a variety of career options that involve the use of 3D game engines. Modelling, texturing and animation skills gained in previous semesters will be strengthened as you learn to generate 3D assets for these engines and implement them effectively for interactive platforms. With the introduction of real-time ray tracing, global illumination and hyper-realistic visuals, there has never been a more exciting time to explore this topic!
In this course, students will explore motion graphics using industry standard editing, sound, motion and compositing applications. Using video clips and still imagery, along with audio, students will create exciting motion video sequences and then output the complete compositions to various formats and resolutions. Students will create and render animated text and graphical elements that include sound for added impact. The creation of special effect compositions will also be studied and executed by the students.
In this course, students will learn how to create dynamic and user-friendly websites using popular Content Management Systems (CMSs) and e-commerce solutions such as WordPress, Squarespace, and Shopify. The course will cover CMS theme development, advanced workflow planning, and user research and content strategy based on the Human Centered Design (HCD) methodology. Students will also gain knowledge on managing e-commerce websites, including product management, conversion, and fulfillment. By the end of the course, students will possess the skills to build, deploy, and manage complex websites and online stores that meet various business and user requirements.
In this advanced photography course, students will explore a range of cutting-edge techniques and tools to capture and enhance images specifically for interactive media platforms, while broadening their camera and lighting skills acquired in the first year. Students will be encouraged to focus on areas of photography that interest them the most, such as commercial, portraiture, and nature photography, empowering them to develop and refine their own unique style while mastering a professional workflow.
Building on web development fundamentals, students will be introduced to advanced topics and the most current practices in web development including the Node.js development environment, JAM stack website deployment, JavaScript framework-based web applications, Progressive Web Applications, and cross-platform mobile application development. With a continued emphasis on best practices, modern workflows, security and performance, students will explore the techniques for creating rich, dynamic and user-centered digital applications.
In this course, students will continue to develop their UX design and creative coding skills, while building on emerging interactive technology topics such as physical computing and 3D printing, to create engaging user experiences that go beyond keyboards, mice, and computer monitors. The course will include small, experimental lab exercises, and work towards larger more complex interactive installations that follow human centred design (HCD) methodologies through clearly defined project phases, in a collaborative, team environment. Hardware and software skills will be combined with material design work to create experiences for end users in real-world physical environments. With a basic understanding of electricity and electronics, students will learn to capture a variety of sensory user inputs, such as motion, distance, touch, temperature, sound, and light, as well as physical buttons, switches, and dials. This input data will then be used in programs written for microcontrollers to control output components such as lights, motors, servos, speakers, and display screens. There will also be a focus on producing polished physical installation materials from 2D and 3D printing, laser cutting and more. Whether for educational, entertainment, or other commercial purposes, or purely for artistic expression, this skill set will provide interesting new options for future projects and career pathways.
Building on interactive design and development fundamentals from previous semesters, students will work individually and in collaborative groups to create immersive interactive experiences. This course will place a strong emphasis on research and collaboration, as well as creative play and experimentation. We will explore current and emerging interactive technologies such as 360 Video, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. Students will draw on the knowledge and skills and problem solving methodologies developed through research assignments and in-class activities to complete immersive, interactive projects through planning and development phases.
In this fourth-year Interactive Media course, students will build on the graphic design fundamentals and interface design skills developed in previous semesters to plan, produce and present a range of design solutions for multifaceted marketing and public education campaigns. Through these campaigns, students will become versed in producing design solutions across a range of print, outdoor, merchandise, and interactive media, while building a sensitivity for designing within the constraints of brand identity guidelines. A particular emphasis will be placed on design research and peer-led critique in order to create a variety of designs that convey meaningful information effectively to specific target audiences.
In this course, students will create an interactive 3D project based on the use of a game engine application. Timely execution of a project, both independently and as part of a team, is critical to its successful completion. Planning, time management and production quality will be stressed throughout the course. Assignments for this course will be built upon, culminating with the delivery of a finished 3D interactive experience for the targeted platform.

In this course, students will be provided with the opportunity pursue their individual areas of interest while collaborating on multifaceted interactive media projects such as websites, web applications, mobile applications, video games, virtual reality experiences, or interactive installations. They will be expected to create planning documentation, pitch their project ideas, give regular production updates, participate in group critique, and present their final work. The project management approach for these projects will borrow from Agile principles, with a focus on iterative design and innovation, along with effective collaboration and continuous productivity. Students will be challenged to create user experiences that will both engage and delight their end users, while prioritizing their own professional development and the commercial applications for the designs and technical solutions they create.

Students will apply their accumulated knowledge and skills to plan, design, and implement a multiphase project with a local non-profit group or organization. Building on fundamentals of IM417, this course will provide practical experience in project planning and management, time tracking, team collaboration, coordination and delegation, and client communication skills. Major outcomes of this course include portfolio-ready work demonstrating a range of interactive media skills acquired throughout the IMD program, as well as professional development skills, networking experience, and higher-level experience working with real world clients.
Physical computing combines the use of both hardware and software to create interactive experiences for end users in their physical environments. Utilizing introductory knowledge of electricity and circuitry, along with interactive design and development fundamentals, students will use electronic components to capture a variety of sensory inputs such as motion, distance, touch, and light, as well as those from buttons, switches, and dials. They will write programs for microcontrollers to use this input data to control output components such as lights, motors, servos, speakers, and display screens. The course will begin with small, experimental lab exercises and work towards building simple robotic creations and eventually more complex interactive installations. This course will provide students with a thorough introduction to the subject of physical computing and an overview of other related trends and technologies associated with maker communities and makerspaces.
Entrepreneurship is important in every type of business, but especially in Interactive Media, where freelancing is more common and self-branding and online networking is critical. Students will develop their personal brands and present them to target audiences of peers, professors and industry professionals. They will research industry trends and market needs and develop their abilities to connect with people in their industries to secure employment opportunities. Even students with a future in non-freelance work will greatly benefit from the entrepreneurial approach taken in this course.
In this course, students will be introduced to the business side of interactive media. Over 14 weeks, students will work full time hours with a business or organization in the Interactive Media industry. Students will be expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and function as a productive team member. There will be a focus on finding local placements, although out of province or international opportunities may also be explored. Online journal entries and final reports will be required of students. Employers will provide mentorship and feedback to ensure quality learning outcomes.

Geography plays a significant role in the evolution and expansion of economic activities. Regional, physical, political and demographic geography all impact economic development and global trade patterns. This course examines all these elements in the context of selected regions and countries within Europe, the Americas, East Asia and South Asia.

The student gains a detailed knowledge of appropriate packaging, labelling, and carriage alternatives essential to a career in international business.
Complex and interrelated economic, social and institutional problems contribute to the underdevelopment of many countries of the world. This course reviews many of these problems in a national, regional and global context and examines possible policy options to address them.
Companies have several options as they prepare to take advantage of international opportunities. The range of factors that must be considered is both numerous and complex and each must be carefully assessed. Students examine the different elements of a successful export strategy including company resources and objectives, market entry options, distribution alternatives, and role of partnering and strategic alliances. The challenges, regulations and opportunities in US markets are examined in detail. An outcome of this course is the preparation of a detailed export feasibility study.
Success in international marketing depends on the ability to identify opportunities and assemble the appropriate mix of resources for any specific foreign market. Students learn how to assess a company for export potential, perform global market research, access trade and market research on-line, and select an appropriate market entry strategy. Students learn the nature, value and importance of international trade missions and trade shows; their role in international market research and market entry; and the potential and limitations of each. The course also discusses the role and services of embassies, consulates and trade commissioners in facilitating export market development and international trade.

The course considers the broad spectrum of strategic management issues within an organization, and within the global economy. The course views the business within its particular industry, as well as within the broader competitive environment; it examines what a firm must do to survive and prosper. Students will analyze internal and external business conditions in order to understand the policies and strategies that guide a company striving to retain competitive advantage in a global economy.
International Business Finance and Foreign Exchange
This course provides a background on the international financial environment and focuses on managerial aspects from a corporate perspective. Major financial markets that serve international business are introduced, relationships between exchange rates and economic variables are described and the forces that influence these relationships are explained.
This course introduces students to the field of business planning, with a specific focus on importing. Students will examine the development of a business plan for an importing venture. They will consider the key components of a business plan, associated forecasting methods and promotion strategies that must be included. Topics covered will include the nature and role of importing in Canada; commercial importing; identifying import market opportunities; locating and assessing foreign suppliers; import feasibility assessment; pro forma financial statements and the purchase, promotion and sale of imported products.
International Business Law Ethics and Dispute Resolution
Students develop an understanding of the legal problems and considerations associated with global business activities. International dispute resolution mechanisms are examined including related processes and procedures. Through case analysis students review a number of cases to arrive at legally substantiated positions on cases associated with a variety of topics studied. Students also examine the challenge of reconciling the demands of international business and the application of business ethics and reviews domestic and international rules and laws regarding ethical business practices.
This course is designed for International Business Management students without previous teaching backgrounds. It focuses on teaching methodology with emphasis on strategy development and practical applications of how to teach reading, writing, speaking, listening, and grammar in an English as a Foreign Language context. Candidates will research EASL resources and job opportunities. Candidates will also develop teaching resources. Upon successful completion of both theory and practicum courses, students may receive an EAFL certificate.

The practicum component of this course focuses on teaching methodology with emphasis on strategy development and practical applications of how to teach reading, writing, speaking, listening, and grammar in an English as a Foreign Language context. Practice teaching of peers and particularly EASL students is key to the program. Candidates will develop and gather audio, visual and realia teaching resources. Upon successful completion of both theory and practicum courses students may receive an EAFL certificate.
This course provides a background in international economics with a focus on areas critical to the conduct of international trade. It consists of four components. The first component reviews various trade theories and direct and indirect barriers to trade. The second component examines a variety of different mechanisms employed globally to promote trade growth, including foreign investment. The third component deals with international banking, debt and debt forgiveness. The final component examines alternative views to international trade and trends in globalisation.
This four-month block placement with a private or public sector establishment will provide the student with an opportunity to apply his/her theoretical knowledge and skills to the practical situation.
Introduces the philosophy and guiding principles that represent the foundation of a continuously improving organization. Addresses the roles of leadership, strategic planning and deployment to exceed customer expectations. Additional topics include the role of teams and associated processes to maximize profitability.
This course will equip the student with the tools and procedures to effectively analyze and resolve problems. Various methodologies will be explored and contrasted; however, the focus will be on The Eight Disciplines or "8-D's", process as developed by Ford Motor Company to resolve a problem when the cause of the problem is unknown. Throughout the 8D problem-solving process, a team will use process and statistical tools. Process tools are thinking processes which require a unique set of steps, while statistical tools are validation and verification techniques used to display information in ways that make the most sense and are the easiest to use.
This course will demonstrate how two complementary, continual improvement philosophies have been combined to provide a methodology that achieves rapid improvements in customer satisfaction, cost, quality and process speed. Through the application of a structured approach, students will learn how to reduce waste, minimize defects and eliminate non-value-added activities in any manufacturing or transactional process.
Using mechanical based CAD software, the student will develop their skills in advanced modeling techniques of complex shapes and curvatures. This course will further expand the student's knowledge of evaluation tools, stress analysis, mechanical simulations, photo rendering and movie generation.
This course introduces the students to relevant topics, not necessarily covered in the program, through independent research and study. The course is also aimed at improving the student's written and oral communication skills, research skills and project management skills.
Operations Management is responsible for all the activities that create value by transforming inputs to outputs. Operation managers play a key role in orchestrating the resources required to produce the final product. This course introduces the critical part of an organization that is responsible for key activities such as product design, resource allocation, scheduling, equipment and facilities, location strategy, job design and work measurement. The concepts of operations management are discussed and applied to current issues arising in today’s manufacturing industry.
The course introduces the student to the use of a microcomputer as a business tool. Specifically, the student uses basic features of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook in a Windows 2000/XP Pro environment to perform tasks commonly encountered in business. Additionally, the student will be introduced to the Internet.
This course provides an introduction to algorithm development, programming, computer concepts, and the design and application of data files and structures. The logical and physical structure of both programs and data are also included. This course will introduce the student to object-oriented, event-driven programming for the Windows environment using development tools such as Visual Basic.

How information is used within an organization is reviewed leading to how information technology enables improvements in information quality, timeliness and competitive advantage.
This course reviews numerical and computational skills, which are applied to business concepts and procedures in buying and selling, simple and compound interest, annuities, mortgages, amortization, insurance, stocks and bonds. This course also introduces algebraic concepts.
This course expands the student's knowledge of the use of personal productivity software and microcomputers in the business environment. The student gains intermediate level practical experience in the continuous use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access. The student will be introduced to HTML.
This course continues coverage of object oriented, event driven programming using development tools such as visual basic. Included will be the creation of Windows applications which permit access to a variety of information sources.
This course provides the technical skills necessary to become an A+ certified technician. These skills will be learned through a series of hands-on lab exercises and review questions designed to teach and improve your PC configuration and troubleshooting skills which are necessary to function as a PC support or helpdesk technician.
This placement will occur over a time period of approximately sixteen employer workweeks. The placement contacts are arranged and coordinated by Career Services and the program coordinator. The student is submitted a list of prospective Co-Op placements, and competes with fellow students for these placements, very much like a job opportunity. The procedures and regulations pertaining to the student placement are according to the College's 'CO-OP HANDBOOK FOR STUDENTS'. The student is responsible for paying a standard work placement fee in the semester previous to the work placement. During this work placement, the student has the opportunity to further his/her instrumentation theory and practical skills in a full-time work situation outside of the academic environment, under the sponsorship of host industrial establishments. This may be the most important opportunity the student has in proving he/she can develop his/her long-term career goals, and secure prospective permanent job contacts, while enhancing their practical skills.
The student returns to College upon completion of his/her first Co-Op work placement. A nominal 1-week period is allocated for the student to prepare a written report, submit the report for evaluation and critique, and prepare an audio-visual presentation outlining the outcome of the placement. This course introduces the student to descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and quantitative methods. Topics include descriptive measures, probability concepts and distributions, sampling techniques, hypothesis testing, Chi-square applications and linear regression. Students will be introduced to survey design and analysis methodology.
This course presents the student with many of the common instrumentation and process variables found in modern industries. The student will examine the various applied science techniques used to measure variables such as pressure, level, density, flow, temperature and analytical measurements, and the methods of transmitter calibration.
This course will provide the student with the opportunity to experiment with and investigate the following topics: pressure, level, density, flow, and temperature measurement with associated process transmitters. Process measurement principles and practices will be exercised with pneumatic, electrical, electronic and computer based systems.
In this course, students will learn about electric motor construction and applications as well as how to configure and operate various electrical motors and variable frequency drives. Students will also study the operating characteristics and selection criteria of control valve bodies, actuators and positioners.
This course further examines the physical design, programming, testing and implementation of object-oriented, event-driven applications. In covering database-related topics as well as such topics as Windows Common controls, component-based design techniques, class modules, Internet-related controls, and the creation of object hierarchies and .NET Controls. This course will explore the entire process of database development and implementation. After a review of the database models of both the past and present, the course concentrates on the concepts inherent in relational databases. A hands-on approach to database design, creation, and use will be emphasized through the use of such popular DBMS's as Oracle and Microsoft Access.
This course covers electronic measurement and control systems. The student will study the various process controllers and instrumentation control techniques used in modern industry. Topics of study are controller design and functions, feedback, cascade control, ratio control, adaptive gain control, feedforward control, and analysis of other control strategies that ensure quality of manufactured products. Instrument, process, and control valve characteristics are also covered.
This course; with its laboratory experiments, provides the student an industrial like environment to investigate instrumentation characteristics, variable measurement and manipulation of temperature, liquid level, flow rate and density. This course examines new and emerging developments of Information Technology and related fields. Computing systems, mainframes and microcomputer hardware and software applications, and peripheral system devices are considered. Students will research assigned product information independently from a variety of sources and present their findings to the class.
This course focuses on the concepts and practice of small enterprising planning, development, marketing and management. Students will be exposed to various issues which impact upon business development and the change required within organizations to manage growth. Where possible, venture case studies from the IT industry will be used and a business plan will be prepared.
This course continues the web development techniques started in IT451. Possible topics include JavaScript programming, defining data structures using XML (Extensible Markup Language), building web applications using XML, and converting XML applications into HTML.
This course introduces the student to object-oriented analysis and design using UML, the Unified Modelling Language. Such UML diagramming techniques as class diagrams, object-interaction models and time-dependent behavior models will be explored in dealing with such object-oriented design principles as encapsulation, generalization/specialization hierarchies, inheritance and polymorphism.
The student is placed in a practical simulation, with a 'real' client project to complete in the allotted course hours. Students will experience project planning, proposal writing, contract development, and client evaluation of the final product. This is a major project and students may function in work teams.
This placement will occur over a time period of 15 employer work weeks. The procedures and regulations governing this placement will be those listed in the College's 'CO-OP HANDBOOK FOR STUDENTS'. The student will pay a standard work placement fee in the semester previous to the work placement. During this second 15-week work placement, the student has the opportunity to further apply his/her data processing skills outside of the academic environment. This will prepare the student for greater usefulness and productivity in the computer field upon graduation by giving him/her an opportunity to function as a programmer/analyst in a business data processing environment under the supervision of an actual employer.* Each employer workweek constitutes a 30-hour credit. Thus, the student will work fifteen employer workweeks to achieve the 450-hour credit of the course.
The student will return to the College upon completion of his/her second coop work term. During this threeweek period, he/she will report on and share his/her placement experience with other CPA coop students as well as with College personnel.
Students are placed for a two week period in selected industry throughout the Northwestern Ontario region and are expected to satisfactorily perform basic functions under the supervision of industry personnel. Performance evaluations will be conducted by both industry supervisors and college staff.
This course will develop in the student the ability to perform calculations involving whole numbers, fractions, percentages, decimals, ratio, proportion and to solve trade-related problems using a scientific calculator. The student will manipulate and transpose algebraic equations or formulae to express them in terms of any desired factor and calculate the value of that remaining factor. The student will use basic geometry to determine length, area and volumes of rectangles, squares, triangles, polygons, cylinders and conical shapes, including the use of Pythagoras's theorem to solve problems involving right angle triangles. The student will use the sine, cosine and tangent functions to calculate angles and sides of triangles.The student will enter into a computer terminal with accuracy, understanding program limitations and guidelines.
This course is designed to familiarize the Techniques student with basic components and use of a microcomputer in a stand-alone or network environment. He/she will gain an introductory understanding of the basic operating system(s), word processors, spread sheets and be able to access a variety of computer programs.
This is an intensive course introducing the customs, culture and language of the Hispanic world. Attention will be paid to the four learning skills: listening, speaking, writing and reading. In addition, students will acquire a command of the essential grammatical structures of Spanish and a vocabulary of 2500 words. The course covers structures of the Simple Present Tense (Presente de Indicativo).Students will be challenged and encouraged to participate in class actively. The learner will continue to communicate orally and in writing in basic Spanish by expanding and personalizing selected contemporary topics from distinctive and changing aspects of daily life to broader social concerns, economic and cultural issues in Hispanic countries. The student will also develop geographic literacy about specific Spanish-speaking countries through case studies. The student will view and listen to scripted and culturally authentic materials to reinforce comprehension and to refine communicative competence in Spanish by simulating realistic situations that may be encountered while conducting business in the Spanish-speaking world. In this course students continue to develop for career purposes a balanced, flexible, four-skills approach to Spanish that stresses communicative competency and cross-cultural awareness of retail businesses, national and regional specialties, geographic food-name variants, household setting and chores, personal care and routines, as well as the mastery of language structures. Communicative exercises and scenarios involve students in personalized responses and pair work which reflect general and potential business situations in the future career of students.
