Water quality is the degree to which water is pure enough to fulfill the requirements of various uses. The water quality course involves the analysis of the water molecule, its capacities and limitations, limnology and sampling. Emphasis will be placed on the application of regulatory sampling and laboratory procedures for analyzing common physical, chemical, microbiological and toxicological parameters of water quality.

Upon completion of this course, the student will have a working knowledge of provincial environmental statutes in general, and certain key regulations in particular. They will acquire a basic awareness of current and proposed legislation for obtaining approvals and permits, methods used to assess compliance, sampling procedures, reporting requirements, penalties and liabilities. Topics covered will include a history of environmental legislation in Ontario, regulation of water discharges, toxic substances, air emissions, waste disposal practices, noise and vibration, pesticides, emergency planning and spills response. Site decommissioning, and environmental assessment processes will also be examined.

Students will learn that water is an absolutely fundamental ingredient to life. However it is difficult to obtain desired amounts of water of sustainable purity in many locations. Therefore, a sustainable future will depend upon learning stewardship of water resources: (1) to understand the natural water cycle, its capacities and its limitations; (2) to understand how we are overdrawing certain water resources and the consequences of this action; and (3) to understand how water must be managed if we are to achieve sustainable supplies. This course deals with the inventory and management of our surface and groundwater resources. Environmental technologists will be able to detect, describe and quantify the types and effects of common aquatic pollutants both in the field and in the laboratory. They will apply regulatory sampling procedures for analyzing common physical, chemical and biological indicators of surface and groundwater quality.

Upon completion of this course, students will have gained specific skills and training in an environmental setting. They will have collected samples in the field and/or analyzed with computer applications to data sets. Others will collate and/or interpret data for various public and private sector environmental agencies. From health and safety auditing to site decommissioning, and from environmental effects monitoring to impact assessment, students will be experiencing the conditions, opportunities and realities of their chosen field. Should students prefer, they may select a relevant computer applications course in lieu of a field placement. The course must have the prior approval of the instructor and the Registrar.

This course will provide student with knowledge of the industrial processes and environmental management measures which are used in industry with emphasis on Northwestern Ontario industries.

The course will provide the student with knowledge of processes which are used for the purification of water and waste water. The course will include a review of water chemistry and the study of processes for the production of potable water and the treatment of sanitary wastes (sewage). Classroom sessions will be supplemented by laboratory demonstrations and tours to observe full scale processes and equipment.
