Students will spend one full day each week in a pre-arranged placement setting. This placement, in an elementary or high school, provides the students with the opportunity to become familiar with the educational setting from the point of view of an educator, practice skills learned in the classroom, and put theory into practice. Students are expected to complete the competencies outlined in their Field Placement Resource Package. Students must meet requirements of the program before a placement will be arranged.
This course will serve to inform potential Teacher Aides and others in the field of exceptionalities of the ways they can be more effective in working with the exceptional individual. Emphasis will be placed on exceptional children in Ontario and instruction to meet their unique needs. This course provides an overview of the role and responsibilities of Teacher Aides in special education and in the mainstreamed classroom.
This course is the second part of the series on the process on human growth and development. Students will study development from school age to final life stages. The main areas of study will include physical, cognitive, personality, and social/emotional development.
This course will introduce the students to the skills needed to accurately observe children in the classroom setting. The student will learn to document observations using a variety of record-keeping methods.
Exceptionalities II will attempt to define the term 'learning disability' as it is applied to children of average or above average intelligence who seem to experience difficulty in processing information, and as a result, underachieve in school. This course includes components on learning disabilities, student learning styles, and techniques to augment learning in the class. As well, there is a major component dealing with behavioural management strategies. The needs of the gifted students and strategies for working with them are covered.
This course will introduce the student to the topic of child abuse, including signs, issues, treatment, and procedures to be followed by all agencies. The various types of abuse will be examined. The legal responsibility of the Teacher Aide in reporting child abuse will be emphasized as well as an overview of the role of the child welfare system in dealing with abuse. Some importance will be placed upon the role of the Teacher Aide in supporting a teacher's efforts in helping a child cope with abuse. Some emphasis will also be placed on special issues of abuse for teens including date rape, suicide and sexual harassment so the Aide will be able to support appropriate teacher intervention in these areas as well. Throughout the course, issues of personal self-awareness will be emphasized so that students may anticipate their reactions to these situations and be prepared to cope with them in a professional manner.
Educational Technology is a course designed for students in the Teacher Aide program. Extensive use of the Internet for research and as a teaching tool is a major component of this course. Students will design a classroom activity and present it using presentation software. Using a hands-on approach, students will learn to implement adaptive strategies and become familiar with special needs software programs such as:Dragon Speak (speech to text software)Write Out Loud (text to speech software)Read Please (text to speech software)There is a placement component to this course.
This course will help the student to understand the growth and changes that occur during normal adolescence. The physical, cognitive and social development of the adolescent will be examined. There also will be coverage of the aberrations to the norm, including delinquency, eating disorders and suicide.
The basic responsibility of safe drug administration and control will be emphasized as well as monitoring of prescribed drugs and their expected therapeutic effects. Students will examine the use and misuse of non-prescription and prescription substances. Students will also be familiarized with procedures in personal care.
This course offers opportunities for discussion and direct instruction related to field placement and issues related to work in school settings (the EA role, professionalism, integration/inclusion, cultural diversity, ethics, legal responsibilities, and advocacy). Learning is enhanced by the sharing of student experiences. This course also prepares students for job search and employment.

Physical Science for Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering
This course introduces the student to various concepts of physics as related to Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The student will be introduced to Newton’s law of motion, vectors, material properties, electrical fundamentals, statics and dynamics.
This course introduces the student to technical drawing. Sketching techniques, applied geometry, orthographic projection, drawing layout, sections/conventions along with dimensioning principles will be used to produce sketches and simple working drawings for the manufacturing workplace. The use of dimensioning and tolerancing principles, limits and fits, auxiliary views, welding conventions, thread conventions and GD&T will be used to compile detailed workshop drawings. The main focus will be on interpreting and analyzing design drawings.
This course introduces the student to basic workshop skills and sheet metal fabrication. Shop safety, blue print reading, layout techniques, materials handling and processing, use of hand tools, compilation of work orders and simple process plans will be topics of focus.
This course provides an introduction to the CATIA CAD software that will be used to develop solid model parts, part assemblies and engineering drawings. Students will use CATIA to create details and assembly drawings to further their knowledge of limits, fits, auxiliary views, welding conventions, thread conventions and GD&T.
This course introduces the student to intermediate level fabrication and assembly procedures for Sheet Metal components using Aircraft Standards. Topics of focus include an introduction to Assembly Tooling, the use of advanced Material Processing techniques, and Process Planning Procedures using the computer as a tool.
This course continues to improve the student's understanding and skill in the use of powered machine shop equipment, including lathes, milling machines, drilling machines and grinding machines.
This course is intended to introduce the student to issues and concerns relating to the environment and energy usage in the context of a global community. Students will be introduced to conflicting points of view presented by various interest groups. A significant part of this course will involve discussing current environmental and energy topics from various viewpoints.
This course will introduce the student to the effect of forces acting on rigid bodies and the bodies' ability to resist these forces. Students will examine various structural members and jointed connections to determine their applicable strength characteristics.
This course introduces the student to the more advanced fabrication, assembly and planning procedures for aircraft components. Working in teams, students will focus on advanced assembly processes, advanced tooling processes, change management principles and configuration control.
This introductory chemistry course introduces the student to the periodic table, chemical bonding and molecular structure as an aid to explaining the composition and behaviour of metals, polymers and ceramics used in the aerospace industry. The basic concepts of metallurgy are presented through a combination of theory and laboratory practice.
This course is an introduction to CNC machines and manual programming techniques. Metal cutting theory including cutting forces, machining power requirements and control of surface finish will be studied.
This course introduces the student to the basic principles and applications of Tool Design. Using 3D CAD drafting (CATIA) students will focus on designing simple jigs and fixtures for the manufacturing workplace. Estimating tool cost, locating, supporting and clamping along with jig and fixture construction principles will be topics of focus.
This course introduces the students to the wide spectrum of manufacturing and joining processes. Students will focus on honing their research and presentation skills while gathering information needed for selection, proof and specification of materials and processes for product design and manufacture.
This course focuses on all aspects of careful management of the processes used to produce and distribute products and services. It will examine the concepts and techniques used to solve complex problems in areas such as inventory management and project management. This course includes substantial analysis of internal processes to determine efficiency and effectiveness of the management process.
This course will introduce the student to static and dynamic fluid properties, Pascal’s Law, Bernoulli’s Principle, continuity and other concepts. Simple industrial fluid power circuits using hydraulics and pneumatics will be designed in class and later tested in a laboratory setting.
This course is an introduction to computer aided CNC programming. Complex tool paths will be created with the aid of CAD/Cam software including CATIA machinist and ICAM CNC post processor.
The students will continue a study of properties, treatment and testing of metallic, aerospace materials. Quality control and inspection techniques as applied to the exacting requirements of the aerospace industry will also be introduced. Students will focus on the hands-on use of inspection principles including physical and non-destructive testing (NDT) equipment and measuring instruments.
This course will expose the student to an overview of the manufacture of non-metallic structures. A basic understanding of composite materials technology, fiber/matrix properties, lay-up and cure procedures, tooling concepts, process planning and materials handling concepts for advanced composite components and structures will be the focus.
This course will utilize the principles of strength of materials and beam theory to design machine elements, structures and components common to the aerospace manufacturing industry. Topics will include three dimensional force system analysis, beam and column design, combined stresses, static and dynamic friction analysis and machine efficiency.
This course introduces fundamental concepts of statistical process control and the application of these concepts to issues arising in the Aerospace industry. It examines the practical application of quality principles. Emphasis is placed on the interpretation, understanding and use of quality principles and concepts throughout the problem solving process.

The objective of this course is to familiarize students with various types of engineering alloys and their application in the aerospace industry, so that they will be able to make better decisions for materials selection for engineering designs. The course will also provide some understanding of metallurgical structures, various heat treatment processes and how they relate to mechanical properties of alloys.
Operations research is applied to problems that concern how to conduct and coordinate the activities within an organization. The process begins by carefully observing and formulating the problem, including gathering all relevant data. The next step is to construct a model and obtain suitable solutions using mathematical techniques. This course introduces fundamental concepts of operations research and the application of these concepts to the issues arising in aerospace manufacturing.
This course builds on the engineering and design skills acquired in earlier courses. Students will apply sound design concepts to design a working automatic system that will meet prescribed performance criteria. Hands-on lab work will reinforce the concepts presented in class. Team work is emphasized.
Operations Management is responsible for orchestrating all resources needed to the final product. This includes designing the product, deciding what resources are needed, arranging schedules, equipment and facilities, designing the jobs to make the product and designing the work methods. Basically, operations management is responsible for all aspects of the process of transforming inputs into outputs. This course introduces the concepts of operations management and the application of these concepts to the issues arising in the aerospace industry.
This course provides an overview of additive manufacturing (AM) covering fundamental processes and technologies. It includes instruction on foundational AM principles, supported by hands-on applications. Students will learn about various families of AM technologies, the many ways to create input information including 3D scanning, and how to operate several AM machines.
The course introduces the students to relevant topics, not necessarily covered in the program, through independent research and study. The course is also aimed at improving the student's written and oral communication skills, research skills, and project management skills.
This course will introduce advanced concepts in manufacturing, including multi-axis CNC, Additive Manufacturing, Reverse Engineering and Lasers. Analysis, evaluation and application of research work for use in manufacturing will also be introduced. Completed work will be presented to the other class members.
This course will expand on the skills attained in TM 453, Composite I. Utilizing concepts learned in Computer Aided Design and the Introductory Composite courses, the student will design, build and test suitable composite structures in a team/laboratory setting. Industry standard materials and procedures will be used to complete the project work.
This course is intended as a bridge course for students entering the Fast-Track option for Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering Technology. The course prerequisites are an engineering degree in manufacturing, aeronautics, aerospace, mechanical, production or industrial engineering or the equivalent thereof. This course is designed to be taken concurrently with the third semester of the AMET program, although it could be taken as a separate course, before entry into the third semester of the AMET program.

This course is designed to introduce the students to the basic skills and background knowledge of the industry, tools and licensing requirements of an AME. As well as review safety procedures and appropriate PPE applicable to the job. Students will be given the opportunity to learn hands on with ignition systems using real aircraft parts for both piston and turbine engines.
Tech Studies lll is designed to introduce students to Motive Power. Through a combination of theory and practical experience, the student will learn what skills are required for a career in this trade. After the successful completion of this 7 weeks course, students will have the background necessary to proceed with further study in the Motive Power Program.
Trades studies Vl is designed to introduce students to Welding. Through a combination of theory and practical experience, the student will learn what skills are required for a career in this trade. After the successful completion of this 7 weeks course, students will have the background necessary to proceed with further study the Welding Program.
In this course, students will be introduced to a variety of basic skills and knowledge related to piloting an aircraft in Canada. Students will have the opportunity to establish a base of aviation knowledge which they will use in both the classroom and flight simulators in Aviation Studies 1 and 2. This base of knowledge will introduce students to the topics required in a Transport Canada Private Pilot ground school. This course is recommended for students who are considering Aviation Flight Management as a future program.
In this course, students will learn from a mixture of interactive classroom lectures and hands-on labs. This course will expand on the knowledge covered in Aviation Studies 1 and introduce air law, flight preparation, and use of checklists. This course will put into practice some of the basic elements of flight including radio communication, engine starting, taxiing, and basic flight maneuvers. This course is recommended for students who are considering Aviation Flight Management as a future program.
In this course, students will explore and discover material properties through a mixture of interactive classroom lectures and hands-on labs. An exploration of natural materials such as wood, soil and water and their applications with respect to engineering, trades and natural resources. After the successful completion of this 7 week course, students will have the background necessary to proceed with further study in Civil Engineering, Carpentry Renovations and Techniques, and Natural Resource Study programs.
In this course, students will explore and discover the fundamentals of electronics and circuits components. This course will explore thinking and will include both formal and informal logical reasoning, logical fallacies, an examination of conspiracy theories, and a brief introduction to mathematical logic.
In this course, students will be introduced to PC components and Windows Operating System GUI features and acquire the skills to use College communication and educational systems, including Blackboard, College Email, and public/personal directories. Students will be familiarized with Windows Operating System (OS) Command Line Interface (CLI) to interact with the computers by typing commands into a text-based interface to control the OS. Microsoft Office 365, specifically Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, will be delivered to students to perform tasks typically anticipated in the workplace.
Science 1 is designed to introduce students to various science topics that link directly to Technology and Trades. Through a combination of theory and practical experience, students will learn about kinematics, the laws of motion, force, simple machines, impulse, and momentum. Successful completion of this course will ensure students have the scientific foundation necessary to proceed with further studies in a more advanced program.
In this course, students will reinforce English language skills through a co-ordinated program of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The students will place special emphasis on the development of skills necessary for effective communications in the various fields of technology or trades and will use microcomputers for writing assignments.
Trades Studies I is designed to introduce the students to a variety of skilled trades. The students will have the opportunity to spend one third of the semester in each of the following trade areas; carpentry, welding and motive power. This course is recommended for students who are considering a trades, techniques or pre-apprenticeship as a future program. Through a combination of theory and practical experience, the student will gain the background necessary to proceed with further study in a more advanced program.
Technology Studies I is designed to introduce the student to a variety of basic skills related to drafting, surveying and soil analysis. This course is recommended for students who are considering civil engineering technology, mining, environmental or forestry technician as a future program. Through a combination of theory and practical experience, the student will gain the background necessary to proceed with further study in a more advanced program.
In this course, students will be given hands-on familiarity with a low-cost Raspberry Pi computer, learn how to use it, program it with Python, connect it to sensors and motors, and use it with the Internet of Things (IoT). With an emphasis on Microsoft Office 365, students will acquire intermediary skills in operating Microsoft Excel and Access.
Science 2 is designed to introduce students to various science topics that link directly to Technology and Trades. Through a combination of theory and practical experience, students will learn about matter, thermodynamics, and various topics of earth science such as climate, plant and animal biology, and hydrology. Successful completion of this course will ensure students have the scientific foundation necessary to proceed with further studies in a more advanced program.
This course is designed to provide the Pre-Technology/Pre-Skills learner with the fundamental written communication skills required in the workplace today. The learner studies the process of communication with its inherent problems, strategies to overcome these problems, planning techniques, basic and specialized writing skills required for effective writing such as defining, outlining, summarizing, and developing persuasive arguments. The learner will also be introduced to writing research reports.
This course introduces students to the use of Microsoft Office 2016 applications and Windows 10. Specifically, students will use basic and intermediate features of Windows 7, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher to perform tasks commonly encountered in the workplace. Students learn the basics through weekly lab sessions to learn the application of the basics to specific projects.
The student will learn about the traditional regional geography, which is the study of cultural and significant tourist attractions of Canada from a travel industry perspective based on the tourists' motivations, needs and expectations. The latest trends and interesting current issues related to travel and tourism within and among regions will also be analyzed. The history of the Indigenous Peoples in Canada will be discussed, along with the evolution of Indigenous Tourism.
This course will provide an introduction to the key concepts and issues facing the tourism industry in Northwestern Ontario. Trends, market profiles, demographic factors, the five industry sectors, tourism geography, and key regional products in the area will be studied. Tourism's role in community development, social impacts of tourism, and transportation will be investigated.
The student will be introduced to the history, current scale, and scope of the Airline Industry. The student will learn the 24-hour clock system, International Phonetic Alphabet, world-wide time zones, and other airline terminology and lingo required in this dynamic industry. Operational and business functions of airlines will be discussed, as well as the various government and airline regulatory bodies.

This course will leverage todays' leading customer service strategies to help raise the standard of service excellence for an organization, division, or team. The student will develop a customer-centric culture and acquire a set of customer service tools, which will create a consistent culture of empowerment and continuous improvement that will inspire exceptional service. This course provides the opportunity for the student to work towards achieving the Ontario Tourism Education Corporation (OTEC) Service Excellence Certification.
In this course, the student will have the opportunity to examine geography as a global phenomenon, with an emphasis on unique, off the beaten path, and emerging destinations for the more experienced Canadian traveller. Social, political, and environmental impacts on global tourism will be discussed, as well as tourism trends and patterns, special interest areas, and most-visited attractions. The appeal of these destinations to a variety of consumer types will be examined from a travel industry perspective.
The student will acquire a foundational knowledge of all aspects associated with business operations including marketing, accounting, finance, and human resources. Students will learn how these components interact to influence the success and growth of an organization in addition to examining the role of management and entrepreneurship.
This course will introduce students to theory and practice related to working in the outdoor adventure industry. Students will examine the roles of government and private sector in the industry. The application of various skills related to navigation, survival, trip planning, and the practice of a variety of outdoor recreation activities will be examined. A certification in First Aid/CPR will be completed.
In this course, the student will be introduced to the basics of airline operations and the specifics of an airline customer service agent position. The student will have a detailed understanding of aspects related to aircraft, baggage, check-ins, booking reservations, handling of passengers with special needs, boarding announcement procedures and providing quality customer service. Radio Operator's Restricted Certificate (Aeronautical) will be earned.
In this course, students will focus on defining and developing skills necessary for the job search process, including resumes, cover letters, interview and presentation skills. The course will provide students with the tools and strategies to prepare students to research, apply for and secure field-relevant employment or placement, both domestically and internationally. Students will develop a personal career plan to help in identifying workplace opportunities consistent with defined career and educational goals.
In this course, students will learn the theoretical and applied principles required to understand and demonstrate competency in a variety of outdoor eco-adventure pursuits. The student will develop beginner-intermediate skills, knowledge and experience to safely travel, work and participate in the Canadian Shield eco-adventure hiking, outdoor cooking, camp set up and search and rescue, in natural and urban settings. As a renowned four-season destination, northwestern Ontario serves as an ideal outdoor classroom, offering a ready-made environment that provides an applied educational setting in the outdoor adventure tourism industry. Focus will be placed on the main concepts, techniques and application of 'Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics' within the context of tourism. Certification in 'Leave No Trace' will be included.
The SABRE Red Workspace (GDS) course will provide the student with the knowledge and skills to complete a travel reservation using the live SABRE Red reservation system to book airline flights, hotel reservations, and ground transportation. The student will become familiar with the terminology and concepts of the agency and airline environment as they pertain to Sabre, acquiring the necessary tools to service clients in a professional and timely manner.
In this course, students apply knowledge of the tourism system to the planning, design and management of tourism products and sites, by developing a sustainable tour product. Tourism planning approaches and guidelines for sustainable development are examined from a variety of perspectives. The aim of sustainable tourism is to ensure that development brings a positive experience for local people, tourism companies and the tourists themselves. Tourists are increasingly concerned with the environment; students will examine sustainable tourism practices implemented by lodges, resorts and tour companies.
