In this course, students will explore a breadth of relevant trends in recreation therapy. Adaptive technology as it relates to communication, mobility, use of the environment, and cognitive functioning will be explored. Principles of Universal Design and the Human Activity Assistive Technology Model will be examined as they relate to adaptive technologies. The topics of multi-sensory environments, video games, virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, robotic companions, and tablet applications will be related to treatment outcomes. The process of administration of medication will be practiced and connections between medications and program design will be made. Cultural competence will be discussed with a focus on leisure subcultures. Students will practice processes related to the therapeutic use of magic. Sexual health will be explored as it relates to health-promoting leisure activity participation.
In this course, students will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to plan, implement, and evaluate leisure education programs with clients. Students will examine models related to leisure education with a focus on Stumbo and Petersons Leisure Education Content Model and Datillo’s Leisure Education Model. Student will identify and explore the role of behavioural stages of change in leisure education.
In this course, students will complete an 80-hour agency-based placement. Students will work in consultation with the program coordinator and faculty to choose a field placement agency for their agency-based placement. Students will gain practical experience in the application of the knowledge, skills and attitudes that have been learned in their recreation therapy courses.
The student will choose a field placement agency and complete a three day per week practical work experience in a therapeutic setting and apply the knowledge, skills and attitudes that have been learned in the other courses.
In this course, students will complete a 175-hour agency-based placement and a 175-hour lab-based placement. Students will work in consultation with the program coordinator and faculty to choose a field placement agency for their agency-based placement and to select a volunteer client for their lab-based placement. Students will gain practical experience in the application of the knowledge, skills and attitudes that have been learned in their other recreation therapy courses.
In semester 4, students should be prepared to make direct connections between the theory and the practice of Therapeutic Recreation. In this seminar, students will learn with and from each other's experiences in order to help broaden their knowledge and skill-set in the field of Therapeutic Recreation. Students will reflect, discuss, compare and demonstrate significant placement experiences and valuable facilitative techniques.

Immersed in experiential learning through traditional Anishinaabeg and science classroom teachings, this course introduces the learner to fundamental sustainability concepts, the biomes of the world with a focus on the boreal forest - land of the birch (Wiigwass). Fundamental ecology, forestry concepts and disturbances will also be discussed. Throughout the course, students will construct traditional technologies, tools, and other items of cultural significance utilizing the “gifts” from the boreal forest.

This course describes human anatomy and physiology at the cellular, tissue, organ, and system levels of organization. Aspects of this course will concentrate on the clinical application of anatomy and physiology. The course is delivered each week as three (3) hours of lecture, three (3) hours of laboratory activity.
This course continues the description of the anatomy and physiology of a healthy adult human body that was begun in SN100. The cellular, tissue and organ levels will be studied as they apply to the following organ systems: nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, lymphatic, immune, digestive, urinary and reproductive. In addition, an examination of fluid, acid/base and electrolyte balance will be undertaken. Aspects of clinical relevance will be included for several systems. The course includes, weekly, three hours of theory in lecture format and three hours of lab activity.
Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes that drive biological systems. This course explores the basic principles of biochemistry and develops the student's appreciation and understanding of biological networks. Because the field of biochemistry is continually evolving and touches many areas of cell biology, this course also includes an elementary introduction to the study of molecular biology. Students will be introduced to general biochemical concepts that will provide a basis for understanding the biological and chemical principles underlying human physiology and disease.

The introduction to microbiology provides the learner with foundational knowledge that has applications in the health sciences including foundational nursing knowledge. The learner will explore theoretical and laboratory applications of course learning outcomes. The learner will explore the basics of microbial cell structure and function, antimicrobial therapy, drug resistance, antibodies, and laboratory/diagnostic microbiology. The learner will explore common infections and inflammatory responses in the immune system and lymphatic system, integumentary system, musculoskeletal system, and reproductive system. In this course, students will examine historical development and current political and ideological influences on the social welfare system in Canada. This course also examines contemporary challenges being experienced by Canadians living within the social welfare system and role of the professions of Social Work and Social Service Work in assisting with addressing those challenges.

Students will explore the historical, political and legal context of mental health practices in Canada. In this course, students will deepen their understanding of social service work with groups. Social service workers are required to work with groups in almost all practice settings. Whether the "group" is a case conference, team meeting, research focus group, community meeting, or group therapy, social services workers are required to understand group dynamics and know how to facilitate group process. This course will provide an opportunity to learn and practice specific skills necessary to promote effective group functioning. It is designed to help students further develop skills and comfort in various group dynamics, group development, analysis, facilitation, and evaluation.

Students will examine the core beliefs and values that govern the ethical practice of generalist social service work. Students will have the opportunity to review relevant literature of interventions for clients to be used in multiple practice settings. In this course, students will be able to observe and practice their knowledge and skills in a social service-related agency practice. Students will work under the supervision of a professional staff person, have the opportunity to observe social services procedures and practices, and take part in developing professional relationships with clients based on the profession's values and ethics. The student is guided and evaluated by an agency supervisor and a faculty supervisor; who work together to provide a constructive learning experience for the student. Students will also be expected to maintain a record of their placement activities through the submission of a learning plan, reflective journals and other documentation. Students will participate in a monthly seminar where they will discuss challenges and opportunities that arise in field practice, and integrate learning acquired from academic courses with practical experiences. The seminar component transitions the student to professional Social Service Worker and highlights what is required to be successful in the field.
In this course, students will explore the challenges experienced by a range of diverse populations in Canada. Students will integrate the Generalist Perspective and Anti-Oppressive Practice in their role as Social Service Workers in assisting and supportive diverse populations including: children and youth in the child welfare system; women; persons living with disabilities; older persons; immigrants and refugees; and, sexual and gender diversity of persons.
In this course, students will gain an understanding of some of the major theories that inform the practice of social service work. Students will have the opportunity to review relevant literature of interventions for clients to be used in multiple practice settings. Students will examine and critique each theory from an anti-oppressive lens.
This course is the second field placement for the student, which gives further opportunity to integrate knowledge, values and skills in a practical social service-related environment. The student is assigned to work within an agency four days per week, for the semester. Relationships with clients and skill development will be more advanced and broader than the first placement. Student will demonstrate the ability to relate to a variety of clients and/or client groups. The student will demonstrate positive functioning as part of the social service team. Plans for future professional growth will be explored.

This is the introductory course in structural mechanics. The course begins with a study of systems of units used in the Architectural and Civil Engineering fields. It then moves on to introduce the Mathematical techniques needed to analyze forces as vectors. Finally, students will learn how to determine the forces acting on simple structures in static equilibrium.
In this second course in structural mechanics, students will build on their fundamental skills to solve for reactions and analyze internal forces in simple structures such as trusses and beams. They will then be introduced to the typical forces and factors applied to structures in Limit States Design. The course will wrap up with the study of tributary areas and the transfer of loads through a structure.
This course introduces students to the internal effect of systems of forces acting on rigid bodies and is a prerequisite course for further studies in structural design. It includes demonstration labs investigating the stresses and strains on wood, steel, aluminum and concrete during strength testing.
Students will learn the theory of reinforced concrete's behaviour. They will learn to design flexural members including beams and one way slabs footings and walls. Design is in accordance with CSA CAN3 A23,3M. Students will be introduced to cutting edge technologies in the reinforcement and retrofitting of concrete structures.
This introductory course in structural steel design introduces the students to structural steel products, and basic structural steel design in accordance with the requirements of CAN/CSA-S16.1 M 'Limit States Design of Steel Structures'. Topics will include steel and composite beams, columns and tension members.
The focus of this course is the design, detailing and inspection of steel and concrete connections. The course will focus on the design of bearing connections for steel and issues of anchorage, bond and development length for concrete. Through these design efforts and consideration of construction tolerances, the student will be prepared for a position involving the inspection of steel and concrete construction.

This course will provide students with an introduction to the history of colonization of Indigenous communities in Canada. Contemporary Indigenous community issues within Northwestern Ontario (NWO) and Canada will be examined. Students will explore the unique socio-political relationships between Canada and Indigenous peoples with an emphasis on colonial, legal and political issues. With a broader understanding of the context of colonization, students will analyze contemporary relationships and efforts towards renewed relationships and reconciliation.
This course will introduce students to the field of Sociology. Students will develop a general understanding of sociological perspectives by focusing on the basic concepts of sociology. Topics examined include, culture, socialization, sexuality, inequality, crime, deviance, education, religion, gender, media, globalization and the environment. Furthermore, students will be able to use basic sociological terminology and apply the major sociological perspectives to current social systems in Canada.
In this course, students will study diversity from an anti-oppression and social justice framework. Students will explore how elements of race, class, gender, sexuality, disability and age have been transformed into systems of oppression and privilege. Various forms of stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination and racism, as they relate to the division of cultures and classes in society, will be examined. Students will develop diversity competency skills and will explore strategies to create socially inclusive and equitable environments; skills that are in demand in today's workplace.
The emphasis of destination geography is to study the cultural and significant tourist attractions of Canada, United States, and Mexico from a travel industry perspective, based on the tourists' motivations, needs, and expectations. The latest trends and current events affecting tourism in the areas studied will also be discussed.
The student will explore the eight sectors of the tourism industry through classroom instruction, site visits and guest speakers from a number of the sectors. Other integral components of the course include the study of tourism industry associations, current events, leisure & recreation tourism and channels of distribution between supplier and consumer. Tourism is Canada's fastest creator of new employment opportunities.
This program has been designed to meet the increasing need for qualified specialists in many facets of the transportation and global outdoor adventure industry. It is the program's intent that students acquire, with faculty advice, and at their own expense and time, to obtain a minimum of three certifications in either the Inbound Tourism Sector or the Outbound Tourism Sector. One certification must be earned through the Orientation Canoe trip.

The dynamics of selling techniques through customer service skills and tools will introduce students to the importance of selling Canadian travel products. This course familiarizes the student with the fundamentals of itinerary planning for Domestic travel, using the Galileo Canada computer reservation system. The student will gain experience in creating reservations and accessing all types of relevant information required by a client to travel by air.
Co-operative Education is a learning method which formally integrates academic study with work experience in a cooperating employer organization. This 'hands-on' exposure affords the student the opportunity to develop skills in the application of theory to practical work experience and to develop attitudes conducive to effective interpersonal relationships. It is a great opportunity for the student to meet and network with business personnel and entrepreneurs.
The student will learn terminology, components and categories of tours and charters. This section of Marine and Land will focus on marine transportation including cruises, as well as sun package holidays and resorts. Standard references and brochures are explored as sources of product knowledge. The student will also learn to interpret travel insurance rate guides and compute premiums for the leisure traveler. This course includes examinations for specialist certifications from Marriott Hotels and Carnival Cruise Lines. The Travel Industry Act, 2002 is studied in depth. Each person selling or providing travel advice to the public must pass a provincial examination. The examination is part of the course.
The growth of worldwide tourism has created opportunities and challenges for established and emerging tourism destinations. The course looks at how to conduct a tourism assessment to examine tourism potential and how to measure the potential cost and benefits of a tourism development program. It examines how destinations have improved competitiveness by creating environmentally friendly tourism products and services. The course emphasizes establishing polices and management plans to identify and reduce the environmental impact created by tourism facilities.
This course introduces theoretical and practical applications of heritage and environmental interpretation and education. Interpretation is an educational activity which aims to reveal meanings and relationships through the use of original objects, by firsthand experience, and by illustrative media, rather than simply to communicate factual information. Students will develop an understanding of Canada's park systems and the role Heritage Interpretation has on park tourism at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels. Students will develop and practice skills and knowledge required by front-line park interpreters, outdoor educators, tour guides, and parks and museum staff.

This course introduces theoretical and practical applications in dealing with risk in the Outdoor Adventure Industry. Risk, accident theory, and the concepts of perceived and inherent risk are studied. The Canadian legal system, liability and negligence, waivers, releases, and issuance will be examined from the business perspective. Emphasis is also placed on the Ontario Industry Act, TICO (Travel Industry Council of Ontario) and the features of the Compensation Fund.
This course is a continuation of Air Travel Orientation I, whereas the student will learn how to make modifications to the reservations they have created. The student will also be introduced to manual and automated ticketing techniques, as well as processing administration forms for ticket refunds and ticket exchanges. They will learn how to access required documentation information (passports and visas), immunizations, custom/immigration procedures, and current travel advisory information for the International traveler.

The student will also be introduced to functions and responsibilities of an airline Customer Service Agent and airline Flight Attendant.
This course will focus on the designing and planning of an outdoor adventure enterprise. Emphasis will be placed on the development of a business plan for the launch of an outdoor adventure firm. The course will examine the physical, human, information and financial resources necessary to successfully start and manage the venture and will also provide an appreciation of the various demands required of an entrepreneur.
This course provides students with an understanding of the concepts and issues surrounding the growing global interest in Ecotourism and sustainable economic development. The definition and principles of ecotourism, cultural tourism and outdoor ethics are examined. Focus will be placed on the main concepts of ecotourism. Students will plan and participate in a 'No-Trace' outdoor event.
As a student in the Tourism and Travel-Adventure and Ecotourism program you will have the opportunity to experience culture in a foreign destination. This international field trip known as a "familiarization trip" in the industry is designed to introduce the student to both its physical and cultural geography. At the destination, the students will assess tourism operations, resort and hotel inspections, visit major tourist attractions, participate in tours and network with local tourism and hospitality personnel.
As an alternative, if a student is not able to partake in this international experience, they will be required to complete a field placement component in a tourism related position which will enable the student to explore their chosen field and apply the knowledge and skills developed in school in a professional environment. These non-paid positions may include travel operations, airlines, hotel services, sales, retail, event and trade shows and exceptional customer service positions, among others.
