This course will provide the learner with opportunities to examine the role of the Practical Nurse, when caring for individuals experiencing complex health challenges; and when caring for individuals in either a maternal-newborn, pediatric, or acute/chronic psychiatric nursing environment. The learner will continue to apply the five competency frameworks from the Entry to Practice Competencies for Registered Practical Nurses (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2019): professional practice, ethical practice, legal practice, foundations of practice, and collaborative practice. Issues such as WHMIS, transportation of dangerous goods act (TDG), ISO 9000, ISO 14,000, etc. are to be introduced at a hands-on level to the students. Students will be introduced to regulations related to the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Health and the Fire Marshal's Office. Guest speakers from these organizations will be an integral part of the course in order to ensure that the current issues are addressed.

This is an interactive hands-on course that explores the rapidly expanding world of electronic commerce. In order to gain a greater appreciation of the comprehensive nature and the tremendous impact of electronic commerce, students will experience electronic commerce first-hand and will consider the various components of electronic commerce in the functions of the business chain. Emphasis will be primarily placed on the business/management and customer service aspects of electronic commerce, however, the technological, legal and social aspects will also be explored. Participants will examine successful electronic commerce business cases and will be able to discuss both the reasons for current success and future opportunities. In this course, students will expand principles learned in Dispensing Lab 1, which includes to proficiently dispense prescriptions using computer software, entering and updating patient and physician details, and selecting correct drugs and dosages. They maintain patient profiles, handle billing, and print pertinent drug and billing sheets. Students understand therapeutic drug classifications and engage in role-play to demonstrate prescription management. Practical experience is gained in preparing various non-sterile medications, such as liquids, suspensions, and creams. They become adept at using laboratory equipment for compounding and emphasize accurate calculations, measurements, and record-keeping. Finally, students compound by adhering to master formula sheets and individual prescriptions.

Enhanced knowledge of various common disorders, communicable diseases, alterations in speech and language, hearing and vision impairments, mental health disorders, disorientation, delirium, and various forms of dementia will be covered. This course is also designed to support the knowledge and skills for clinical practice of PW 200.
This course will provide the learner with a general understanding of the structure and function of the human body. The learner will begin to examine body systems to obtain knowledge of how the structures and functions are related to maintain homeostasis.
This course will provide the learner with an opportunity to apply in a supervised placement, knowledge and concepts learned in the classroom and lab. This course will consist of clinical experience within a long-term care setting.
This clinical experience will provided the learner with the opportunity to consolidate skills and knowledge obtained throughout the Personal Support Worker program. The learner is expected to safely integrate the care planning process through applying the knowledge and skills in the role of the Personal Support Worker. In collaboration with a Personal Support Worker preceptor in the clinical setting, the learner will gradually increase their practice to the graduate level and prepare to enter practice as a Personal Support Worker. This clinical experience will take place in a community or long-term care setting of the learner's choosing in consultation with the Program Coordinator.
Advanced Lab Skills for the Personal Support Worker
This course will provide the learner with advanced skills required for their role as a Personal Support Worker through both in-class theory and hands-on practice in a simulated environment. The following lab skills will be included: documentation, hygiene, grooming, urinary and bowel elimination needs, vital signs (TPR & BP), height and weight and heat and cold application. Advanced skills include oxygen needs, tube feeding, and assisting with medications. This course will also provide the opportunity for the learner to experience the Alzheimer Society's - Virtual Dementia Tour. Evaluation will be a combination of theory and demonstration of skills.
This course provides a more in-depth look at the nursing process, basic assessment and client care, which will help prepare the learner for their role as a member of an interprofessional team. Enhanced knowledge of various common disorders, communicable diseases, alterations in speech and language, hearing and vision impairments, mental health disorders, disorientation, delirium, and various forms of dementia will be covered. This course is also designed to support the knowledge and skills for clinical practice of PW 200.
This course will focus on applying the Personal Support Worker (PSW) scope of practice to assisting and caring for clients and their families across the lifespan. The learner will apply the concepts of holistic and client centered care to clients and their families at various stages of growth. Using Gordon's Functional Framework (1994), the learner will gain an understanding of the unique needs of clients including physical, cognitive, emotional, spiritual, social, personality, and sexual needs at various stages across the lifespan. This course will support the knowledge that is required during clinical placements.

This course explores life from a chronological perspective, beginning from conception, then moving through the stages of infancy, childhood, and concluding with adolescence. Each developmental period will be examined in relation to physical, motor, cognitive, social-emotional, and biological factors that affect development.
This course is designed to provide students with an introductory understanding of addictions and addictive behaviour. The course will explore the various theories of addiction including historical and current conceptions of 'the addict', an understanding of how drugs work, different methods of treatment and the recovery process. Issues of drug use in special populations and family issues will also be examined.
Using a combination of theory and acquired skills, students will learn to express themselves more effectively while preserving the dignity of everyone involved. They will develop the confidence necessary to control their lives without trying to control others in the process. This course facilitates personal growth as the students develop more effective self-expression and healthier relationships. Experiential learning, using a variety of techniques, will be emphasized. Students will participate in role-play, discussions, presentations and personal reflections.
This course introduces the student to the world of psychology by highlighting human behaviour and mental processes at the individual level. Students will learn why people do and think the way they do from a variety of perspectives and how psychological principles apply to everyday life situations. This introductory course provides a strong foundation for other courses in psychology.
This course is an eclectic introduction to perception, art and the creative process. It challenges students to explore the notion of the computer as a creative medium which offers new possibilities for artistic expression and experimentation. This course focuses on human processes of perception, and how and why humans are able to experience two-dimensional products as having three-dimensional real-world qualities. Students will improve their perceptual abilities as they discover how humans interpret, organize communication and media, students will also become adept at critiquing such influences in multimedia productions. Finally, Students will discern the impact of multimedia design in contemporary and postmodern art.
This course is an overview of the human lifespan. The major areas of study include the physical, cognitive, social, and personality domains of development. Students will complete assignments that demonstrate their understanding of human development. In addition, students will identify factors that promote human development.
