The focus is to provide you with a review of the concepts of Palliative Care, the interdisciplinary team, hospice care, current approaches to care, and roles, issues and expectations of those working in Palliative Care. Identify what resources are available and discuss home care vs. institutional care.

The course begins with an orientation to the human body, the levels of organization within the body and the inter-related and interdependence of body systems. The concepts of metabolism, fundamental physiological needs and homeostasis are introduced. All knowledge is then applied to the study of the integumentary, skeletal, muscle and the nervous systems. Learner preparation and learning activities are designed to promote critical thinking. Students have an opportunity to fast track and complete this course in 7 weeks if they choose. Fast track weekly schedule details are provided within the course. NOTE: The midterm and final exams for this course will require booking with a virtual proctor within the course.

The main purpose of the course is to develop and refine transcription skills to a competitive level by using the learning activities included in the textbook. Due to specialized theory and skills, students can expect to spend a minimum of 15 hours/week in this course. Prerequisite: OL456 Begin Medical Transcription Computer Software Requirements: Windows, MS Word, and audio capabilities (speakers or ear phones). Transcription playback software will be a free download from the Internet (Traditional equipment will be simulated). Students may choose to purchase a foot pedal from the software download site (optional).

It includes case histories for timed writings, medical terminology, medical letters, and a variety of medical reports. These exercises will help the learner increase their knowledge of terms they will encounter on the job, and will improve their keyboarding speed and accuracy. A very brief introduction to Medical Transcription is included. This course is a prerequisite for the Beginning Medical Transcription course. PREREQUISITE: Students need minimum keyboarding skills of 30 net words per minute with 5 or less errors. Students with keyboarding skills less than this need to improve their skills prior to registering for this course. OL402, Medical Terminology, can be taken concurrently with this course. NOTE: A fee for course software for timings (Windows compatible) and the manual will be required when the instructor gives the link to access the required manual and software for the course. It is approximately $100.

A variety of conditions will be discussed including age-related changes, food allergies, heart disease, digestive disorders and diabetes. Students will explore the nutrition recommendations, special diets and nutrition support used in the prevention and management of these and other conditions. OL433 Introduction to Nutrition (first course in the program) and OL455 Nutrition in Health Care may be taken concurrently. The student is responsible for ensuring that they are currently registered in OL433 or have successfully completed OL433 before registering in OL455.
