This course is designed to provide students with a working knowledge of transcription of medical reports. Transcription is taking the spoken word and turning it into a written document. Case studies are provided so that the student will gain knowledge in the transcribing of various medical reports. Medical reports will be transcribed from ten individual case studies, each of which concerns an inpatient with a specific medical problem. There are between four and six reports within each case study. Students will be involved in the care of the patient from the date of admission through the date of discharge. Due to specialized theory and skills, students can expect to spend a minimum of 15 hours/week in this course.
Prerequisites: Students MUST HAVE successfully completed: OL400 and OL401. Typing speed of at least 30 wpm, familiarity with a word processing package (MS Word, WordPerfect, KeyPro software), good punctuation and grammar skills.
Computer Software Requirements: Windows, MS Word, and audio capabilities (speakers or ear phones). Transcription playback software will be a free download from the Internet (Traditional equipment will be simulated). Students may choose to purchase a foot pedal from the software download site (optional).
This course is designed to provide the student with the basic principles of efficient Health Claim Billing in Ontario. The student will learn how to use the Schedule of Benefits and Preambles of the Ministry of Health, as well as be introduced to computerized billing. It is recommended that students have taken OL402 Medical Terminology prior to this course, have good typing skills and some computer knowledge.
MACs are not compatible unless they run a Windows OS. The MAC user will be given an alternate theory assignment in lieu of the computerized billing portion of the course, however, the MAC user does not have the opportunity to practice on the billing software.
Offers a comprehensive study of anatomy and physiology in a condensed timeline. Topics covered range from anatomical terminology, chemistry, cell structure and function, tissues, and the integration, organization, and control of the human body systems. This course will focus on communication with individuals with a life-limiting illness, their families and significant others. Topics include: basic process and steps of effective communication, factors influencing personal and cultural attitudes in communication, identifying basic verbal and non-verbal communication, self-care for palliative care providers, and identifying challenges and facilitators to effective communication in palliative care.
This course studies the record keeping practices in hospitals and physician's offices. Emphasis is placed on hospital and medical staff organization, patient record content, procedures in filing, numbering and retention of patient records, qualitative analysis, release of information, forms control and design, indexes and registers, reimbursements, regulatory and accrediting agencies, and alternate health care delivery systems.
The course is designed to help the nurse acquire the knowledge and critical thinking skills needed to perform a complete health assessment irrespective of the population group being served. Students will review methods of obtaining and documenting a holistic assessment including a health history, physical, and psychosocial assessments. There will also be a review of screening tools used for assessing domestic violence, mental and nutritional status, functional assessment, and pain. Students will review the difference between subjective and objective data collection and will also review how to recognize and document normal and abnormal findings in the various systems of the body. Changes in practice and emerging trends in the health care sector is highlighted throughout the text. Students will review the importance of effective communication skills during a patient interview and the value of incorporating cultural competency and care in their daily interaction with patients. Medical Office Procedures is designed for the learner who is pursuing a career in health administration in a physician's office, clinic, or hospital setting. It will include information on professional and career responsibilities, interpersonal and written communications, safety standards, infection control, records management, order entry, financial administration, and managing the medical office. The Canada Health Act and the principles of OHIP medical billing will be introduced.
This course focuses on the cooking principles and methods for preparing food in large quantities. Students will be introduced to control systems used in quantity food production including menu planning, standardized recipes, portion control, forecasting, scheduling and service. Various food types will be examined including sandwiches, salads, desserts, beverages, soups, meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, and cheese. Texture modified and special menu items will also be explored. This course emphasizes the importance of quality improvement and customer satisfaction in quantity food production. This course will provide an overview of ethical, legal and spiritual issues in palliative care. Death and dying in relation to various life stages and cultural influences will be explored.
This course presents students with theories, terminology, and applications underlying current approaches to teamwork and working with the families of children with autism spectrum disorders are explored. The focus is on effective collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team, which is essential to successful intensive behavioural intervention. Students develop the interpersonal, job-oriented skills necessary to problem-solve as team members in a flexible, empathetic, resourceful, and productive manner.. This course will introduce the foundations of ethical thinking and will review the different perspectives and rationale for ethical decision-making within a behavioural framework. Students will be introduced to professional codes of ethics that are essential for ethical practice. They will learn how to think critically and apply general ethical principles to particular situations through the use of case studies, practice vignettes, structured exercises and group discussions. This course will provide participant with the basis for developing ethical guidelines for practice, examining areas related to legislative acts, an overview of the BACB® guidelines of responsible conduct for a behaviour analyst and the ONTABA/ABA standards of practice. Students will also learn how to evaluate their own professional expertise and limitations for ongoing professional development planning.
