Environmental Citizenship is based on the principles of national citizenship, yet it goes beyond political borders to emphasize global environmental rights and responsibilities. An environmental citizen is committed to learning more about the environment and to taking responsible environmental action. Through a combination of interactive activities, assignments and discussions, students learn how they are personally connected with current environmental issues. Students are also encouraged to adopt attitudes and behaviours that foster global environmental responsibility.
This course will deal with the issues of traditional and non-renewable energy sources such as crude oil, natural gas, coal and nuclear energy, as well as renewable energy sources like hydroelectricity, solar, ocean, geothermal and wind energy. Students will obtain a broad understanding of current resources, technologies and their limitations; and a realistic appreciation of what energy sources and technologies may be feasible in the future. Energy is one of the essential needs of a modern society. The scale of its use is closely associated with a society's prosperity and the quality of life that its members experience. However, it has become increasingly clear to all that the prevailing energy system, based on non-renewable sources is unlikely to be sustainable. As a result, the implementation of alternative energy systems have gained momentum in our high energy-consuming society over the last few decades. This course will provide a general overview of various energy sources both conventional and non-conventional. It will also assist students to assess critically the important current debates on energy and the environmental impacts of its generation, storage, transportation and use.
The development of analytical and evaluation skills is required in the management of environmental issues. Students are exposed to environmental policies, legislation procedures, and become familiar with the implications and effects of environmental management strategies. The application and development of site inspections and program auditing are explored to assist in the recognition and analysis of potential environmental risks as they would apply in the development of an environmental management system.

Students increase their awareness of various participants and stakeholders that are typically involved in a commercial construction project, as well as and issues such as impact on the economy, safety, environmental, and use of technology. Students explore various building materials and construction methodologies used in commercial construction, including: durability, availability, ease of construction, and aesthetic perspective. Studies include a review of commercial construction drawings and specifications. Students use a variety of learning tools including standard building practices, commercial working drawings, and trade publication websites. This course will provide the student with the skills, tools and knowledge necessary to develop and manage their career in the Natural Resources fields. This course will include career planning, researching employers, how and when to apply to natural resources employers, program specific resume writing, interviewing, teamwork, interpersonal skills used in natural resource positions, importance of attitude for career success, supervision, and leadership. Program specific examples will be used whenever possible.
This course introduces students to measuring techniques for items in a commercial construction project. Utilizing Excel spreadsheets, students will interpret construction working drawings and specifications to measure items such as excavation, concrete, steel, etc. Emphasis is placed on accuracy of measurement, standard descriptions, logical sequence of take-off, and estimating principles. This course provides students with an understanding of how various stresses affect normal growth and development of trees; introduces particular diseases which impact on tree health and wood quality and provides skills in recognizing signs and symptoms of pathological conditions.

Students explore many facets of building green in the construction industry from a general contractor’s (builder’s) perspective. Students will gain an introductory knowledge of the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), Net Zero Energy program and the various LEED Rating Systems with an emphasis on new construction. The significance of the elements of green construction, green procurement, and contracting for green construction as they relate to a contractor’s green strategy are addressed. The world’s oceans are spectacular in their beauty, majestic in their power and domineering in terms of their effects on climate. Oceans are a source of bountiful food and are home to tremendous numbers and varieties of species. It is very important to possess a good understanding of how the ocean’s work. Our future as a species depends upon the oceans that surround each and every continent. This course examines the oceans from an historical, geographical, geological and biological perspective. The course makes use of an excellent textbook that guides us through the ‘story of the oceans’. Each week, the student will explore a different topic. In order, these topics are: history of oceanography, ocean waters, the productivity of the oceans, seafloor sediments, Plankton and Nekton, ocean currents, waves, tides and the Benthos.
