As projects become more complex it is important that all the parties involved (owner, architect, engineer(s) and general contractor construction) have a proper understanding of contract documents and their relationship to the entire project. This understanding of contract documents is essential to prevent or minimize disputes and claims, which can be very costly. Students are introduced to the documents that form a construction contract. The course builds upon the principles of law and introduces the most commonly used standard forms of construction contracts issued by the Canadian Construction Documents Committee and the Canadian Construction Association. Basic building law, contractual responsibilities and obligations are explored. Students understand the importance of construction specifications and review construction bonds and lien act in the construction industry.
Students use various types of graphs to present information. Students are introduced to basic measures of central tendencies and dispersions for both sample and population. Students are able to use these basic statistical measures to make reasonable business decisions. Students are also able to use time-series and simple linear regression knowledge to perform short-term forecasting using a statistical package as a tool. They also use the consumer price index to find the purchasing power of a dollar and real wages. Students use knowledge of basic mathematical functions to describe business relationships and build models. Students engage in a review of basic mathematics concepts. They are able to apply knowledge of linear and quadratic functions and constrained optimization to practical business situations. Students are able to apply linear programming techniques to business applications. Students integrate business functions with Excel functions. This course is intended to explain the process of construction estimating from contract documents to the methods of measuring material quantities used in general contracting offices. This will enable students to understand the position of the estimator within the business of construction management both in the contractor and sub-contractor’s world. The course focuses on “taking off” methods of materials using simple residential and commercial exercises.
This course will focus on statistical inference involving two or more populations, simple and multiple regression, and correlation and linear programming. The student will also perform data analysis using computer outputs. We recommend students take Quantitative Methods prior to taking this course.
The focus of this course is to provide students with information on current treatment approaches and practices. Students will examine a selected range of treatment models, including Harm Reduction, the Matrix Model, Brief Solution Focused and Cognitive Models, as well as those approaches currently in use within the province. Relapse and relapse prevention will also be examined as part of this unit. Attention will be given to specific techniques that are utilized within these models.

Students will have the option of using Minitab, StatCrunch, or Excel to complete some of their assignments. There is a student fee for access to Minitab. There are assignments in MyStatLab that all students have to complete. The MyStatLab should be purchased as a bundle with the text. This course provides a review of basic arithmetic and algebra as well as providing students with mathematical tools and concepts needed for other college courses and in future employment. This course is to prepare students for later courses in Marketing, Business, Financial Planning, Accounting, Purchasing and Insurance.
This course begins with a review of fundamental concepts including arithmetic operations and concepts in measurement. This is followed by several algebra topics including linear equations, factoring, fractions and quadratic equations. A treatment of trigonometry of right triangles, the trigonometric functions of any angle and of oblique triangles is also included. The goals of this course are, first, to show that mathematics does play a most important role in the development and understanding of the various fields of technology and, secondly, to ensure that students acquire the mathematical and critical thinking skills necessary to analyze and solve engineering technology problems.
This course is intended to guide a student through a proven method of cost estimating. This will aid the student in determining material quantities and unit cost for a complete project. This course will be of interest to those individuals wishing to learn about estimating in a commercial environment. Students will be able to utilize various documents created in the workplace. The build-up and calculations of unit costs for materials, labour and equipment will be the fundamental part of this course. Pre-requisite: OL606 Introduction to Cost Estimating. The professional home inspector is required, both verbally and in writing, to describe the inspection process and communicate inspection findings to the client. It is imperative that the home inspector be able to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding of an inspection, once conducted. Students in this subject develop their oral and written communication skills, and learn the reporting requirements and proper conduct required of a professional in this industry.
The four units in this course will provide the students with an overview of the theory and skills related to the helping relationship process. The course will provide a theoretical framework for examining key concepts related to counselling activities and their application. The course will focus in the nature of the counselling relationship key issues and concerns, techniques for effective counselling interaction and skill building in the key ares of interpersonal communication. Attention will be given to counselling issues and concerns as they related to specific population issues. The course will also introduce basic record keeping within the context of the counselling relationship.
