This course is a continuation of OL617 Technical Mathematics for engineering technology students. Topics of study include a more detailed view of exponents and radicals, plane analytic geometry, geometry, complex numbers, and functions including trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions. This course also includes an introduction to statistics. The goals of this course are, first to show that mathematics does play a most important role in the development and understanding of the various fields of technology and secondly, to ensure that students acquire the mathematical and critical thinking skills necessary to analyze and solve engineering technology problems. This course introduces students to applications of differentiation and integration in selected areas of calculus and their usage in main areas of engineering technology. Topics covered include theory and applications of Maclaurin, Taylor and Fourier series, linear differential equations, functions of two and more variables, double integrals, Laplace transform and introduction to Fourier transform.

Grammar for Writing Professionals aims to provide students with a thorough knowledge of the editing and proofreading process. Potential editors, writers and proofreaders will find this course particularly helpful. They will gain experience recognizing and correcting errors in accordance with accepted Canadian standards. The course also emphasizes the importance of working as part of an editing team to help produce acceptable full length manuscripts.

The general objective of this course is to introduce students to creative writing and the publishing process. Students will follow the various steps of manuscript preparation, including conferencing, editing and proofreading. Character development, narrative unity, and plot construction are explored by analyzing selected short stories and participating in writing exercises. In the latter part of the course, students follow a step-by-step approach to producing a story suitable for publication. The process of submission for publication, as well as the various opportunities for publication is examined.
Students become familiar with the tools necessary to appreciate literature critically by reviewing literary history and examining different genres. Themes and conventions associated with these genres are explored and an understanding of literary analysis and various critical approaches is developed. For creative writing students, a framework in which to appreciate and evaluate their own writing is provided.

Students examine the impact of various types of victimization including cyber-crime, homicide, sexual assault, elder abuse, drunk driving, assault, intimate partner violence, globalization, human trafficking and fraud. Students explore issues of grief, loss, trauma response and the costs associated with victimization. Case studies and role playing, assessment, advocacy and advanced communication skills are developed through discussion.
