Learners will determine the effects of trauma on cognitive development of infants, children and adolescents. Students will also identify those children with trauma histories in order to limit the potential triggers within the therapeutic environment. The theories of loss and grief, as these relate to the infant, child and adolescent population will be explored throughout the course.

Research about repetitive stress injury (RSI) and proper ergonomics is included. The student should be able to achieve a minimum speed of 25 net words per minute (nwpm) with 5 or fewer errors with frequent practice.

Opioid use disorder is increasing at alarming rates for both men and women in North America. The focus of this course is on the Canadian context. Topics to be covered include pain and pain management, biological pathways to substance use disorders, social pathways to substance use disorders, myths and facts about opioids, overdose awareness and prevention (e.g. naloxone administration, changing response to crisis and community access to naloxone and its implications), concurrent mental health disorders, public health impacts, treatment options, and harm reduction.
