This course will familiarize students with the causes, characteristics and consequences of addictions, including chemical and process addictions. Students will be introduced to the available resources for intervention, treatment and aftercare for clients with a dependence. The effects of addiction on the Aboriginal family and community will be highlighted.
The student will receive a basic knowledge of medications, including the monitoring of prescribed drugs, their expected therapeutic effects, and side effects. The drugs most commonly discussed will be those prescribed for prevalent psychiatric disorders treated in Indigenous communities. Finally, the student will explore traditional Indigenous medicines or methods that may be utilized for treating the whole person.
This course provides the learner with an overview of the types of relevant legislation they will likely encounter in the field of mental health and addictions. As a human service provider, learners must have a working knowledge of the laws directly affecting the health and wellness of individuals, families and communities within an Indigenous and non-Indigenous context.
Students will gain insight into the nature of compulsions essential to human experience in the form of ritual and superstition, however, when out-of-hand, becomes distorted versions of healthy impulses.
The practice of gaming has existed in Indigenous populations for millennia. Often used as a measure of personal skill achievement, friendly rivalry, a teaching tool for the young, social activity and, ultimately, in tribal conflict resolution, gaming remains a part of Indigenous culture. However, the nature of gaming has changed in many communities and is now recognized both as blessing and curse. The introduction of casinos as a viable economic development venture that may improve quality of life often battles with the spectre of gambling addiction and the further breakdown of family and social systems in communities. An examination of the dynamics of gambling is critical.
This course builds on basic counselling skills and follows a problem management approach to helping. Refinement of professional helping skills as a common human experience is reflected in the need for trained and competent workers in Aboriginal communities.
This subject examines the dynamics of the family in the context of promoting healing and wellness. It takes a holistic approach to family systems theories with a strong emphasis on the Family Systems Treatment Model with respect to Indigenous people. The role of extended family and historical issues that have affected the individual, the family, and community will be explored.
Human service providers in communities often require expertise in the management and supervision of other service providers in front line positions. This subject helps to demystify these skill areas and the perceptions of management for social workers. Recognizing that management skills are a group of activities performed daily; an extension of the knowledge and values of workers provide insight into the dynamics of human behaviour; and offer a wide variety of approaches helps the Indigenous Wellness and Addictions Prevention Work (IWAP) to develop broader insights into activities impacting on their roles in both organizations and communities.
This course will provide the student with an opportunity to learn the counselling processes that are most effective when working with Aboriginal health and social services programs. The students will be introduced to the basic skills and theory needed in order to follow a productive case plan. A strong emphasis will be placed on the student demonstrating effective communication skills and an ability to integrate the theoretical knowledge into practice.
Students will explore basic community development principles and action that enhances short and long term planning for prevention programming at a community level. Holistic strategies that help in minimizing risk factors will be the primary focus. Accountability consultation, community based planning and developments will also be key elements.
This course has been designed to present an overview of the theory and research pertaining to relapse prevention in the addictive process. It also offers practical methods of treating relapse that are compatible with principles and practices of a variety of modalities in treatment settings. In light of the global Indigenous community's trend to address health issues and encourage wellness promotion competent counselors trained in relapse prevention technology are an integral part of this process.
The student will spend the field work hours in an agency relevant to the program. Specific objectives will be set out for the student to work on under the supervision of the agency and a faculty member assigned to them.

This course will explore the world of building relationships in the sales field with an emphasis on virtual sales and strategies in today’s current market. Students will examine the steps in the preparation, presentation and the follow-up of a professional sale, both face to face and in a virtual context. This course deals with a hands-on approach to developing the tools to be successful in most selling situations. Emphasis is placed on building a relationship based on rapport and trust. Students learn and practice the fundamentals of the sales process, including needs analysis, preparing sales presentations, handling objectives, confirming and closing the sale, the strategic importance of follow-up and providing exceptional customer service. Throughout the course, role playing and case studies will be utilized to allow students to apply sound reasoning skills to solve sales challenges. Students will also have the opportunity to explore digital certifications available in sales and obtain digital badges towards professional sales training.
This course builds on the foundation of Introduction to Marketing. Students will continue to examine current Canadian material on marketing and determine strategies for developing new products and services that are consistent with evolving marketing needs and principles of sustainability. Students will apply their knowledge in producing a marketing plan where they will set marketing objectives, develop a marketing mix and select marketing channels while examining the elements of integrated marketing communications and the communication process. Budgetary considerations will be taken into account and evaluation criteria identified. Students will also contribute to the development of pricing strategies and participate in conducting market research to provide information needed to make marketing decisions. The further development of analytical marketing skills will be emphasized through the use of problems and case studies. This is a highly interactive course where students will continue to participate in a variety of hands-on practical activities and projects to immerse themselves in the fundamentals of marketing.
This course will provide students with a solid foundation of composition and design principles using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.
This course focuses on developing effective advertising layouts. This course will also cover the fundamental aspects of the Adobe suite in the desktop publishing and design industry. Topics covered will include: creating master pages and single and multiple page documents with single and multiple text columns of text; importing text from various sources and flowing it into linked columns of various shapes and sizes; proper kerning/leading and spacing of text and; combining text with imported photos and graphics. Students will learn how to quickly change font or photo size and how to rearrange elements within a page. Assignments will include various document layouts that involve learning about objects, text, colour and fonts.

In this course, students will study the conceptual foundation and practical techniques necessary for creating a comprehensive and effective social media marketing plan, incorporating a solid digital marketing strategy. Mobile apps, website, games and social media have transformed how we work, play, engage in learning and interact with our audiences. This course will provide students with a solid foundation of composition, and editing principles using Adobe Photoshop. Students will also explore free opensource photo editing software options, online graphic design software, as well as other popular video editing software options. Students will learn to produce stunning and professional-looking websites, web images, web videos and social media graphics the quick and easy way using free online tools. Students will learn strategies for engaging their audience using storytelling and interactive media, while using technologies such as mobile apps and social media to achieve this. Strategies for producing engaging and interactive video for use on various social platforms will also be explored in this course. New interactive technologies like virtual and augmented reality will also be explored.
In this course, students will examine the process of selecting, designing, gathering, analyzing and reporting information using various marketing analytics platforms, while demonstrating methods for preparing and presenting marketing research reports. This course examines secondary and primary research, research methodologies, sampling and questionnaire design as well as the foundational and emerging concepts of qualitative research in the digital environment. Students will learn how to select and design the right methodology to achieve the research and organizational objective.
Integrated Marketing Communications and Public Relations
Marketers require a solid foundation in advertising, sales, promotion, public relations strategy, media techniques and applications. In this course, students will develop their skills as they apply fundamental principles and practices of marketing communications in a variety of industry, product, and service situations. Students will prepare a detailed situation analysis on a brand, summarize its target audience, and recommend targeting and segmentation strategies, as well as specific media vehicle selection and scheduling within an assigned budget. Students will work in collaboration with a local industry partner and develop a comprehensive IMC plan while designing effective creative strategies to support this plan, as well as describe how they would be integrated across each IMC function. Students will continue to apply their skills in current design software and gain experience creating effective ad layouts. Further insight into current trends and developments in interactive and digital communications, media relations, event marketing and sponsorship, tradeshow, and public relations will be explored. They will also learn various methods marketers can employ to assess the effectiveness of an IMC campaign.
Student teams are assigned to work with an industry client to apply their learning from the program in a real-world
project. Students are tasked with solving a marketing problem and/or capitalizing on an opportunity presented by a
client. This could include areas, but not limited to, digital and social marketing, research, integrated marketing
communication, fundraising and event planning or a cross functional approach of several key areas. The
knowledge created from this project work guides students to create marketing objectives, strategies and supporting
marketing mix programs collaboratively with local organizations. Students will research the industry and the
selected organizations, gathering vital data to address their marketing needs while applying the innovative
technology skills and competencies obtained in their program. Students also learn unique approaches to client
management along with enhanced team presentation skills, professional development, effective communication,
and analytical skills.
The marketing student of today is required to develop a national and international understanding of business. Studying domestic and global patterns, students will learn to compare and contrast marketing applications from a management perspective. In this course, students will gain an understanding of the strategies and complexities of marketing products and services internationally. They will apply their knowledge in a marketing simulation in which they will develop and implement a market entry and expansion plan for a multinational consumer products company. An experiential approach will be employed in the design of a marketing strategy for a global business opportunity.
This introduction to consumer behaviour shows how the behavioural sciences help answer questions about why people choose one product or brand over another, how they make their choices and how organizations use this knowledge to develop, evaluate and implement effective marketing strategies while creating value for the consumer. In addition, actual applications of consumer behaviour concepts to marketing situations are designed and executed by the students. As well, on a macro level, students will examine the social/cultural environment and will debate and discuss the ethical concerns that consumers have about behavioural marketing applications.

In this course, students are introduced to effective models of fundraising event management, research tools and the feasibility of events for a not for profit organization. Students will learn to prepare budgets; select appropriate venues; and explore suitable activities and tactics. Students will conduct a fundraising campaign from start to finish, planning, executing and evaluating their campaign as well as planning and implementing an event to support this initiative. They will learn about and participate in the structure of a fundraising campaign, establishing a campaign committee and cabinet; and they will solicit donations from the community using various techniques. They will produce communication and other written materials associated with the campaign. They will also explore the changing fundraising landscape in Canada and learn the principles and practices behind effective fundraising. Standards of practice and new innovations and trends in the fundraising field will also be examined. This course will also investigate leadership requirements as it pertains to campaign management.
In this course, students will learn how to develop and apply a digital marketing strategy. Emphasis will be placed on engaging with an audience where and when they expect you to be – through user-friendly websites, mobile sites and apps to direct marketing and social media platforms – thus leveraging the power of the Internet to build stronger customer relationships. Students will learn to identify and develop digital marketing strategies to produce measureable results and gather data necessary to continuously improve future efforts and outcomes.
Students are placed for a block period of four months in selected businesses based on the career interest of each individual. Here the students have an opportunity to observe and apply classroom skills in real business situations. Students are required to complete full reports of their observations and activities. Employers also complete full reports evaluating the performance of the student.
This lecture and laboratory course will emphasize proper and safe techniques when using a variety of laboratory equipment. Students will also become familiar with the more common mathematical principles and practices associated with a routine laboratory.
This lecture and laboratory course will emphasize proper techniques for the collection of blood and other laboratory specimens, including performing ECGs. Students will perform various blood collection procedures as well as perform ECG testing. Students will be introduced to medical terminology as it relates to a medical laboratory setting.
This course will introduce the student to the current ethical and legal issues of professional practice in medical laboratory sciences and the other health professions. The student will demonstrate knowledge of all legislation affecting the medical laboratory assistant, the functions of professional and regulatory organizations, risk management strategies and the Canadian Health Care system. The student will also explore the roles of and interactions with other health care and community services professionals.
This integrated laboratory-theory course will teach the student how to use and handle various laboratory equipment and materials safely and properly. This course provides the student with the theory knowledge and essential applied skills required for the safe practice and complexities of clinical laboratory work.
This theory course provides students with communication skills needed in the healthcare field. Students will develop active listening skills, overcome communication barriers, and produce professional-quality reports and correspondence using basic medical/scientific vocabulary. Students will also develop interprofessional skills and gain an understanding of the roles, responsibilities, and challenges of different healthcare professionals from the lens of laboratory professionals.
This theory course explores the principles of human anatomy and physiology, with a focus on the relationship between the structure and function of the major body systems. Students will learn about the chemical and cellular basis of life, energy metabolism, genetics, and cell diversity, as well as the anatomy and physiology of the body's systems. Students will also explore how these systems work together to maintain homeostasis and how laboratory tests can help diagnose diseases by detecting deviations from homeostasis.

The course integrates topics from mathematics, chemistry, statistics, and instrumentation, with a focus on their practical applications in medical laboratory settings.
This integrated laboratory-theory course introduces students to the principles and techniques of specimen collection and microscopy in the medical laboratory science field. Students will learn how to handle blood and other body fluids and tissues for diagnostic testing. Students will also learn how to use bright field microscopy to examine different cell and tissue types. This course integrates theory and applied components and emphasizes the development of professional behaviours and safety standards.

The student will gain an understanding of reference ranges for routine clinical chemistry tests and the significance of variant results. The student will learn about automated analyzers from quality control, quality assessment, to loading of samples.
This integrated laboratory-theory course introduces students to the principles and applications of clinical chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology. It covers the basic theoretical concepts and applications that underlie the practice of clinical chemistry. Students will gain knowledge of skills and methods necessary to prepare them for working in a clinical chemistry laboratory.
This integrated laboratory-lecture course introduces students to the methods, safety protocols, and aseptic techniques required in clinical microbiology. Students will gain the knowledge to classify and understand the physiology and identification of bacteria at an introductory level. Practical skills developed encompass the isolation, staining, culturing, and sterilization/disinfection methods related to common pathogenic microorganisms encountered in clinical microbiology.
This integrated laboratory-theory course introduces students to immunological concepts and the blood system. Students will learn about the mechanisms of self-recognition, antigen-antibody reactions, and complement activation. Students will acquire practical skills in using immunological methodologies and principles. Students will gain knowledge of skills and methods necessary to prepare them for working in a transfusion laboratory.
This integrated laboratory-theory course covers the skills and knowledge needed to collect blood samples by venipuncture and capillary methods. Students will also learn how to receive, accession, and assess the integrity of various body fluids and tissues for diagnostic testing. Students will build upon their knowledge from Laboratory Skills 1 to follow laboratory safety rules and comply with relevant laws and professional standards.
This integrated laboratory-theory course covers the fundamentals of EKG and anatomical pathology lab skills. Students will learn about the heart's structure, function, and electrical activity, as well as how to perform and interpret EKG tests. Students will also learn about the preparation and examination of tissue specimens for histological analysis. The course emphasizes the importance of professionalism, patient education, informed consent, confidentiality, and ethics in both settings.
Field placement provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate entry-to-practice technical and professional competency while applying skills in the practice setting. Under supervision, students collect blood samples and handle information, equipment, and specimens inside the laboratory. Through the deliberation of assigned topics online, the student demonstrates reflective practice and professional growth.

This is a clinical microbiology course designed for Medical Laboratory Assistants. The student is introduced to various types of microorganisms and common staining and culture techniques used to detect and isolate them in clinical specimens. The preparation and maintenance of culture media and sterilization/disinfection methods in the laboratory will be studied.
This is a Histotechnology course designed for Laboratory Assistants/Technicians. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the theory behind routine anatomical pathology procedures such as routine fixation, decalcification, processing, embedding, cutting and staining of histological/cytological samples.
This course is designed to meet the practical requirement for Clinical Chemistry, Hematology and Transfusion Medicine, and Microbiology, as described in the current Medical Lab Assistant/Technician competency guidelines for the Medical Laboratory Professionals' Association of Ontario (MLPAO) (formerly OSMT) and the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
This course will provide the student with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in a clinical practice setting under the direction of a medical laboratory assistant or technologist. The focus is to allow an easy transition into the workplace environment. Students will be given the opportunity to become proficient at specimen handling and be able to function as a member of a laboratory team.
Students will learn the use and care of surveying equipment and instruments; theory and measurement of horizontal distances; theory and practice of differential leveling using various types of levels; theory and measurement of horizontal and vertical angles using different styles of theodolites; format for recording of field notes and related calculations; errors and corrections in surveying; determining azimuths, bearings, latitudes, departures and coordinates, introduction to traverses.
This course provides an introduction to mineralogy; systems and cycles, geologic time, Earth structure, plate tectonics, weathering and erosions, soils and rock types. Approximately half the course will be devoted to lab work for the purpose of identification of minerals.
This course comprises a discussion and description of major operations in mining and the various techniques used in these operations. Also covered is an examination of the development work that prepares the ore for mining. Learners also study underground processes and surface methods, including placer mining, open pit, and stripping. Students will demonstrate that they understand basic mining industry concepts and terminology. Students will also be able to solve simple grade control problems plus determine productivity rates and three dimensional relations. Delivery of this course is divided into lecture (theory) sessions and lab (problem solving and drawing) sessions.
This course focuses on the introduction to general health and safety protocols in an environment involving small scale and large scale construction and mining operational projects. This course is designed to understand and imply Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act in accordance with WHMS and basics of fall protection. Broadly it explores components of legislation involving health and safety and their implementation in industrial settings.
This course incorporates a brief history of the evolution of various managerial theories and their impact on the modern industrial world along with the types and qualitative aspects of various organizations. This course introduces students to the roles and duties of supervisors in the present day context educating with some of the legal requirements and liabilities associated with supervisory activities. It critically focuses on the nature and characteristic of a motivational supervisor in context to the presently prevalent requirement scenario. A series of video demonstrations are presented in class reflecting various real world situations and challenges for a supervisor. Efforts will be undertaken to analyze, discuss and determine effective solutions for such challenges. This course finally involves knowledge of work-place ethics with a very detailed understanding of progressive disciplinary actions and their critical execution procedures.
This course covers locating and installing survey stations; traverse and coordinate calculations; determination of irregular areas; field determination and plotting of profiles and cross-sections; cross-sectional area and quantity determination; alignment techniques; introduction to electronic distance measurements; the use of CAD Software for various survey projects.
This course develops the students understanding of geologic time, structural geology, topographic and geologic maps, seismology, the mining sequence and ore deposits. Lab exercises relating to these topics plus identification of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks are included.
This course is a study of the application of the basic surface and underground mining methods. An emphasis upon modifications to and techniques used within various methods are reviewed. Underground mining includes hard rock metalliferous mining methods for different types of ore deposits. Open-pit and open-cast mining methods will be reviewed. An introduction to coal mining and novel methods for both underground and surface operations will be made.
