Gaming and Gender: The Digital Divide (Degree Level)
This degree elective breadth course combines the study of digital games and psychological, sociological, cultural, aesthetic and literary influences characteristic in online gaming. Students explore parallels between modern societal values related to gender and those occurring in the gaming world. Through experiential learning opportunities involving gameplay, students examine a variety of elements and how they converge or diverge from socio-cultural norms. This is a degree level General Elective that is approved for BSCN students only.
A successful learning experience comes not only from proper curriculum and instructional design but also adhering to quality assurance protocols. In this course students explore a variety of quality assurance protocols as they apply to course development. The concept of piloting to gather students and instructor feedback is also discussed
Technology and topics change just as rapidly in instructional design as they do in creating timely curriculum. This course will explore trends in instructional design, from mobile learning to simulation software. Concepts of certification or credentialing are explored in relation to online courses and workshops. How can we demonstrate that we have successfully attained a skill in a continuously changing online course landscape? This course contains mandatory group work. We recommend viewing the course schedule immediately upon logging into the course to view course and group work requirements.
This will course provide the student with more advanced and related skills in constructing spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel, developing presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint and creating, maintaining and publishing a database using Microsoft Access. Students completing this course will have a well rounded knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite. Computer Software Requirements: Windows, Microsoft Office 2016, 2019 or 365 Excel/PowerPoint/Access. Short monthly subscriptions to Office 365 are available at an additional cost (relatively small cost) if Access is not included in the version of Office the student is using. MAC users will not be supported in this course.
Students will learn some of the most important topics of HTML, from the basics of creating Web pages with graphics and links, using tables, and controlling page layout, to more advanced topics including cascading style sheets, and adding pre-written JavaScript to HTML documents. Also how to create a multimedia Web page, and create a Web page with forms. Computer Software Requirements: Students will require any word processing software, a basic text editor and Web Browser that supports frames and HTML 4 or higher. Students require access to server space for the final assignment in this course. Note, students my need to pay an additional fee if an acceptable free alternative cannot be sourced.

Every day, millions of people share their opinions with a global audience via Tweets, #s, blogs, wikis, videos, likes, tags, text messages and online comments. Digital spaces and mobile technologies allow us to be connected to our personal and professional networks and communities 24/7. In what ways does this hyper-connectivity impact the ways in which people regard their place in the world and define themselves? In this course we will analyze the social, ethical, political and cultural ramifications of societies that are increasingly mobile and digital. The impact of new genres and forms of expression on our identities will be explored as we actively participate in online networks and create materials for social media. This is a degree level General Elective that is approved for BSCN students only.
This advanced QuickBooks Online Level 2 course addresses the needs of those who desire a deeper look at QuickBooks extended capabilities as well as cloud application possibilities . In addition to reviewing the skills and knowledge required for daily small business accounting needs, students will learn how to streamline processes and support their accounting records for tax and audit purposes. Students will learn about QuickBooks Accountant connections, examine various integration applications to streamline processes, meet specialized business needs, and take a deeper look at the QuickBooks Reporting Centre and how it supports business performance analysis. This course will use an online version of Quickbooks.
This course will prepare students to design a hybrid module from start to finish. Important issues on mixed-mode lesson planning are discussed as well as learning strategies geared towards both face to face and online delivery. Assessment strategies for hybrid delivery are also key to the design process and we will explore best practices for assessment creation and alignment.
Digital pedagogy deals with not only the use of technology, but the appropriate use of technology to enhance the learning experience and engage the learner. This course will prepare students to evaluate, recommend and implement digital tools in a face to face, online, or hybrid environment.
In this introductory course, you'll learn to create a professional website without having to write code by hand and covers HTML5 and CSS3 for responsive web design. You will also learn how to create HTML-based headings, paragraphs, lists, and tables; insert graphics; add links to text and images; apply cascading styles sheets; and customize the Dreamweaver workspace. And finally, publish a finished site to the Web. It is recommended that students have knowledge of HTML.Computer Software Requirements: Adobe Dreamweaver CC.
CCNA 1 covers networking architecture, models, and protocols. The course introduces the principles and structure of IP addressing and the fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, and operations to provide a foundation for the CCNA curriculum. This is the first of three courses that are designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for successful completion of the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) examination. By the end of the course, students will be able to build simple LANs, perform basic configurations on routers and switches, and implement IP addressing schemes.
CCNA 2 continues the exploration of network architecture, components, and operations. The course teaches router, switch, and wireless LAN configuration, link aggregation, network redundancy, and basic device security. This is the second of three courses that are designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for successful completion of the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) examination.
