This course will provide the student with the skills, tools and knowledge necessary to develop and manage their career in the Natural Resources fields. This course will include career planning, researching employers, how and when to apply to natural resources employers, program specific resume writing, interviewing, teamwork, interpersonal skills used in natural resource positions, importance of attitude for career success, supervision, and leadership. Program specific examples will be used whenever possible.
This course introduces students to measuring techniques for items in a commercial construction project. Utilizing Excel spreadsheets, students will interpret construction working drawings and specifications to measure items such as excavation, concrete, steel, etc. Emphasis is placed on accuracy of measurement, standard descriptions, logical sequence of take-off, and estimating principles. This course provides students with an understanding of how various stresses affect normal growth and development of trees; introduces particular diseases which impact on tree health and wood quality and provides skills in recognizing signs and symptoms of pathological conditions.

Topics include Gantt schedule, CPM, Critic Path Planning, Resource allocation, Cash Flow Planning, Schedule Monitoring and Productivity Factors. Students explore many facets of building green in the construction industry from a general contractor’s (builder’s) perspective. Students will gain an introductory knowledge of the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), Net Zero Energy program and the various LEED Rating Systems with an emphasis on new construction. The significance of the elements of green construction, green procurement, and contracting for green construction as they relate to a contractor’s green strategy are addressed. Oceans are a source of bountiful food and are home to tremendous numbers and varieties of species. It is very important to possess a good understanding of how the ocean’s work. Our future as a species depends upon the oceans that surround each and every continent. This course examines the oceans from an historical, geographical, geological and biological perspective. The course makes use of an excellent textbook that guides us through the ‘story of the oceans’. Each week, the student will explore a different topic. In order, these topics are: history of oceanography, ocean waters, the productivity of the oceans, seafloor sediments, Plankton and Nekton, ocean currents, waves, tides and the Benthos.
