Selection Criteria

Some programs at Confederation College are competitive and receive more qualified applications than available seats. When this happens, selection criteria are used to determine who receives an offer.

When Selection Is Used

Selection criteria apply when:

  • A program is oversubscribed, and
  • More qualified applicants apply by the equal consideration deadline than there are seats available

Programs that commonly use selection include:

Programs using selection may change from year to year based on demand. Some programs may also have additional admission or selection requirements beyond the minimum. Always refer to the individual program page for details.

Equal Consideration

To receive equal consideration for Fall programs:

  • Apply by February 1
  • Required courses must be completed or in progress
  • Transcripts must show registration in required courses

Applications received after the equal consideration deadline are reviewed only if seats remain available.

Applicant Priority (First Round Offers)

For the first round of offers:

  1. Permanent residents of Ontario are given priority
  2. Followed by permanent residents of other Canadian provinces and territories
  3. Followed by international applicants

How Selection Scores Are Calculated

Where a program-specific selection process is not outlined, selection in an oversubscribed program occurs as follows:

  • Selection scores are based on available Grade 11 and Grade 12 marks
  • Scores are calculated using the required courses listed on the program page
  • This includes:
    • Grade 12 English (or Grade 11 English if Grade 12 is not yet available)
    • Any other required courses listed for admission

Additional Course Use (Non-Health Programs)

  • Selection may also include the next two highest senior academic course grades (college, college/university, or university level)
  • Health programs are an exception — only the required courses are used

Course Substitutions

  • The College may consider Grade 11 course substitutions where marks in required courses are not yet available

In-Progress Courses and Midterm Marks

  • Midterm marks may be used to reassess selection scores
  • If a midterm mark is failing, it will not be used to the applicant’s detriment
  • Applicants must still successfully complete and pass all required courses with the minimum grade required for admission

Mature Student Selection

Mature applicants (19 years of age or older without an OSSD) are considered based on:

  • Mature Student Assessment (MSA) results
  • Postsecondary grades, if applicable
  • Academic upgrading or ACE program results

All program-specific requirements must still be met.

Bonus Points for Postsecondary Education

Applicants with previous postsecondary education may receive additional selection points, provided a minimum GPA of 3.0 is met.

Completed Credentials

  • Related degree or diploma: +4 points
  • Related certificate: +3 points
  • Non-related degree, diploma, or certificate: +1 point

Significant Postsecondary Coursework

  • Minimum of five postsecondary courses or three full university credits
  • In a related discipline
  • +2 points

Confederation College Applicants

  • Applicants who attended Confederation College for at least one semester
  • Completed five or more courses
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • +2 bonus points (maximum of 2 points total)

Receiving and Confirming an Offer

If you are successful:

  • You may receive more than one offer, but you can accept only one program at one college
  • Offers are conditional until all requirements are met
  • Confirming a seat in one program does not remove you from waitlists for other programs

Confirming Your Offer

  • Offers must be confirmed through ontariocolleges.ca(opens in new window) by the deadline listed on your Offer of Admission
  • Failure to confirm your offer and submit required tuition payments by the stated deadlines will result in loss of your program seat
