Transfer Credits
Applying for Transfer Credits
Transfer Credits Earned Outside of Confederation College Only
- This process is not intended to be used for internal (Confederation College) course equivalencies.
- For information on this, please speak with your Program Coordinator or contact the Registration department at registrationservices@confederationcollege.ca or (807) 475-6265.
Transfer Credit Definition
- Transfer credits are awarded on a course-by-course basis to students who are currently enrolled at Confederation College and have earned academic credits from an accredited post-secondary institution other than Confederation College.
- Only students who are attending Confederation College may apply for transfer credit. Transfer credit assessments are not completed for prospective students who have not yet enrolled or are only considering attending Confederation College.
- Private career colleges are not eligible for transfer credit.
Transfer Credit Grade Requirement
- Transfer credit is only granted for courses completed at another recognized institution with a minimum grade of 60% (“C”) or higher.
- Some programs have higher grade requirements and may require a minimum grade of 70% (“B”) or higher for transfer credit to be considered.
Transfer Credit Fees & Payment
A transfer-credit assessment fee will be automatically charged to the student’s College account when a transfer-credit request is processed.
Fees are based on the number of transfer-credit requests submitted at the time of submission:
- $25 for one transfer-credit assessment
- $50 for two or more transfer-credit assessments submitted at the same time
- Transfer-credit requests submitted at different times will be subject to additional fees. For example, if one transfer-credit request is submitted initially and additional requests are submitted later, the applicable fee will be charged for each separate submission.
- Students are responsible for ensuring the applicable fee is paid. Payment can be made through The Hub or through the student’s College portal account.
- All transfer-credit assessment fees are non-refundable, regardless of whether the transfer-credit request is approved or denied.
- Approved transfer credits do not result in a refund or reduction of tuition fees.
Course Syllabus Requirements
What is a Course Syllabus?
- A course syllabus is an official document that outlines the content and learning expectations of a specific course. It provides detailed information about what was taught and what students were expected to learn and may include the course description, learning outcomes, topics/content covered, required readings or textbooks, assignments, assessments, and instructional hours.DO NOT SUBMIT THE ENTIRE PROGRAM CURRICULUM.
- For transfer credit assessment purposes, the syllabus must relate to the individual course for which you are requesting credit. The course content and learning outcomes are reviewed to determine whether that course is equivalent to the College course.
- Please note that content from multiple course syllabi cannot be combined to create one equivalent course. The intention of the transfer-credit process is to identify a direct or substantially equivalent course, rather than combining individual topics or portions of several courses to satisfy the content requirements of one course.
- Please identify the specific course you believe is a direct match to the College course for which you are requesting transfer credit and provide the official syllabus for that course.
Official Domestic Transcript Requirement
Transfer-credit requests must be supported by an official transcript issued by the educational institution.
The transcript must clearly display:
- The student’s full name
- The name of the educational institution
- The institution’s official insignia, logo, or letterhead
- The courses completed, including course names, course codes, and grades
- Unofficial documents, screenshots, student portals, or documents that have been altered or do not clearly identify the issuing institution may not be accepted for transfer-credit assessment.
Official International Transcript Requirement
- International Transcripts will NOT be accepted for transfer-credit applications unless they have been assessed prior to submission.Transcripts must be submitted in English.
- International transcripts must first be assessed through WES(opens in new window), ICAS Canada(opens in new window), or through our International Education Department at internationaladmissions@confederationcollege.ca.
- The required assessment must be completed before submitting a transfer-credit application. Transfer-credit applications submitted without the required assessment will be denied without refund.
Transfer Credit Processing Time
- Transfer-credit assessments are paused during the summer break while Program Coordinators are away from the College. As Program Coordinators are required to review and assess course content for transfer-credit requests, assessments cannot be completed while they are unavailable.
- Transfer-credit requests received during the summer will be held for processing and will resume once the Program Coordinators return at the end of August. Applicants should be aware that requests submitted during this period will not be assessed until the regular assessment process resumes.
- Due to the large influx of transfer-credit requests submitted at the beginning of each semester, please expect a processing time of 4–6 weeks. Requests are reviewed in the order they are received.
- Please note that some transfer credits may be assessed faster than others. Certain courses have been pre-approved and can be assessed directly, while other courses require review by one or more Program Coordinators. The time required for these assessments can vary depending on the program and the number of courses requiring review.
- Please ensure that all required documentation, including an official transcript and the appropriate course syllabus, is submitted with your request to avoid further delays.
Student Responsibility for Approved Transfer Credits
- Students are required to continue attending classes and completing course requirements until they have received official notification from the Admissions Department confirming the outcome of their transfer-credit assessment.
- Submitting a transfer-credit request does not guarantee that transfer credit will be approved. Students should not stop attending a course or assume that they have received transfer credit until they have received official confirmation from the Admissions Department.
- Once a transfer credit has been approved and applied to your academic record, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure they are not registered in the equivalent College course.
- If you are registered in a course for which you have received an approved transfer credit, you must contact The Hub to request that the course be dropped before the applicable drop deadline:
- Fall semester: November 15
- Winter semester: March 15
- If the course is not dropped by the applicable deadline, an F grade will be assigned for the course.
Final Transfer Credit Decisions
- All transfer-credit decisions are final and are not subject to appeal or reconsideration. Decisions are based on the documentation provided and the established transfer-credit assessment criteria.
- Applicants are not encouraged to contact or discuss denied transfer-credit requests with Program Coordinators, as this will not change the outcome of the assessment.
Dual Credit & AP English
- Exemptions for courses completed in high school for an articulated Confederation College program are processed at no charge.
- Secondary school Guidance Offices will have information on these formal agreements.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I apply for a transfer credit?
It is recommended that all requests be submitted 4 months in advance of registration to allow time for assessment. Fall term requests should be initiated by May 1st and Winter term requests should be initiated by November 1st. Requests received later than May 1st and November 1st will be subject to available resources.
Should I register in a course that I would like to receive credit for?
Yes. You should register and attend the course to ensure that you are able to complete the course if the transfer credit request is denied.
What if I’m taking a course that I could receive a transfer credit towards?
You can still apply for a transfer credit if you are currently taking the course. The transfer credit application must be submitted prior to the semester deadline for course withdrawals. Please visit the Academic Calendar of Events for the approved dates. It is recommended that you continue to attend the course until you receive the assessment results. If the transfer credit is approved and you wish to drop the course, you are responsible to submit the completed course drop form prior to the withdrawal deadline. Please visit Registration Services to print a copy of the course drop form.
Can I still take a course that I have received a transfer credit towards?
Yes. You have the option to register for or continue in the course. You may also choose to audit the course after receiving the Program Coordinators approval.
What courses will count towards general elective or “GE” courses?
Many elective courses at universities or colleges can apply towards general elective or GE courses. These include general knowledge courses such as psychology, sociology, political science, wellness and many more.
How many transfer credits can I apply for?
As students are required to complete at least 25% of their program courses at Confederation College, you may apply for and receive credit up to 75% of the program courses. Please be aware that dropping courses may impact full-time status and OSAP eligibility. Please contact our Financial Aid staff if you have any questions about OSAP eligibility.
