Frequently Asked Questions

Why call 922 instead of 911 in many emergencies?

Except in life-threatening and unknown medical emergencies, the College encourages you to call 922, or 807-623-0465, in any emergency. When you place a 911 call from the College, the 911 Dispatcher can tell that your call is coming from somewhere on campus, including the main campus or the Aviation Centre, but your phone number and specific building location are not identified. This can be a problem if you need to hang up, or are disconnected before you can provide that information.

When you call 922, Campus Security focuses on getting the help you need by gathering and relaying relevant information about the emergency, including your location, to 911, dispatching internal emergency personnel to your location to help until external emergency personnel arrive, and meeting and guiding external emergency personnel to the exact location of your emergency.

What happens when I call 922?

Your 922 call will be received by the Security Guard on duty, who will ask for:

  • Your name, current location, and current phone number.
  • The location and description of the emergency, including the nature of any injuries.
  • The type of service required, such as Security, Campus Response, Police, Fire or Ambulance.

As required, the Security Guard will:

  • Notify the 911 Dispatcher and provide directions to emergency vehicles.
  • Dispatch the Campus Response Team to your location.
  • Report to your location and contact other departments, as required, such as Facilities Services.
Can Help! Phones be used for non-emergency help?

Yes. You can use a Classroom Help! Phone or Help! Phone to place calls for routine assistance, such as opening a door, or to make general inquiries, such as confirming building hours. Classroom Help! Phones provide one-touch dialling access to Campus Security, Facilities Services (Work Order Desk), and the Computer Services Helpdesk.

Campus Response

  • What it is: Campus Response is an on‑campus first aid service that works alongside Security Services.
  • Who provides it: Trained student volunteers (first aid and CPR) with support from Security staff.
  • When it operates: Fall and winter academic terms, with year‑round coverage from designated First Aiders and Security Guards.
  • How it works: When you contact Security for a medical emergency, Campus Response is dispatched.
  • Additional support: If further care is required, Security contacts ambulance services and guides them to the exact location.
  • What to expect: On‑site first aid arrives quickly after you contact Security.
  • Coordination: Security coordinates with ambulance, police, or fire services when needed.
