Why I Chose Confederation College
After finishing an HBA in Political Science from Lakehead University, I felt that something was missing in my education. Much of the information gained in university was theoretical, and there was not a possibility of increasing work experience in my field. As with anywhere, the experience is everything when looking at the job market. Without the experience of working in a particular area, employers are not as likely to spend any time looking at an application. This was one of the main reasons for looking at the college's programs. While searching the program choices, I came across the Accelerated Aboriginal Community Advocacy program. After reading over the program descriptions for the courses, I felt that it was something that would allow me to expand my horizons and learn more.
How Confederation College Has Changed My life
When I first applied for the accelerated Aboriginal Community Advocacy program, I did not know what to expect. Being a non-Indigenous student going into a program which is centered around a culture that I did not have immense or in-depth knowledge on was nerve-racking. However, the program allowed me to meet some fantastic people, including my instructors, and learn more about things that would help me towards my future career. The students in the program are accepting and open-minded, while the program provides essential skills to succeed in the workforce.
My Most Positive Experience of Confederation College
My most positive experience was meeting all the students within the Aboriginal Community Advocacy program, and getting to know many of my classmates. Being a non-indigenous student, as well as being in the accelerated version of the program (with my university degree), I was concerned that as with my previous studies, I would be working through things on my own. By some miracle, I was able to meet three of the most amazing girls and they, along with my instructors, pushed me to be the best person and student I was capable of being.
My Recollection of a Teacher Who Made a Difference
When looking at someone who made a big difference during my time at Confederation College, Jana-Rae Yerxa the Program Coordinator, was someone who not only pushed me to do better, but opened my mind to personal growth that I had not considered. By going out of her way to ensure the success of her students, she showed an understanding, willingness to help and strength not seen in many people. How Confederation College Has Prepared Me for Work in the Field? Due to the use of internship placement within the program, there was the capability of learning from supervisors within a workplace setting. The placement opportunity allows students to thrive within the chosen field and earn some life experiences that can help to impress future employers. The classes were always focused on how learning would be converted into workplace situations; in turn, this focus prepared the students for their future placements within a multitude of areas.
My Advice for Someone Considering this Program or Career Path
I believe that this program provides the opportunity for students to gain in-depth knowledge in this field of study, by showing aspects of history, culture, uses of advocacy, and other such studies. The only advice I could provide is to keep an open mind and let yourself become involved in the program. Also, when you are having problems academically or personally, go to your instructors and explain to them what might be affecting you. They are there to help and only want the best for you as a student.

When looking from the perspective of an employer, I have always thought that dependability and a strong work ethic are vital in looking at applicants. Being able to rely on an individual to get a task done without constant supervision is something employers focus on. With this in mind, the Aboriginal Advocacy program allows students to work together to target both of these skills in a variety of situations. The program also pushes students to stay on schedule with assignments and keep a strong work ethic going with set standards of excellence in place. These skills prepare students for their future job opportunities and ensure that these essential skills are incorporated into their base of knowledge.
