Everyone who completes this program will graduate with a greater perspective regarding Indigenous inequities and realize the significance of decolonization and indigenization in Canada.
Why I Chose Confederation College
I chose Confederation College because it was the only college that offered a social services program specifically geared towards working with Indigenous people.
How Confederation College Has Changed My life
Confederation College is small in size and enabled me to network with other college parties so easily.
My Most Positive Experience or Memory of Confederation College
My favourite memory was sitting in class and feeling the vibrations of the drumming circle at the Powwow happening in the Atrium. On the break, I went to check it out and I felt such a strong sense of pride for my college.
A Teacher Who Made a Difference
Pam Burton, who is the Program Coordinator, made all the difference in my experience during this program. She is such an inspiring and intriguing educator that truly shows her passion in every single lesson.
My Job & Job Responsibilities
My role as Educational Assistant is to support students who have social or academic challenges. I am currently working in a school that has a high population of Anishnabek children and with such a diverse student body, it is important to understand the cultural context of which they are living in.
What Brings Me the Greatest Satisfaction From My Job
Everyday you are helping children in small steps.
My Advice for Someone Considering this Program or Career Path
The biggest piece of advice that you will hear throughout this career is self-care! This program and career path can be emotionally exhausting if you are not taking care of yourself. Before even applying, you need to ask yourself if you are ready to be challenged and let go of your fears.
My Sense of the Current Job Market Conditions in my Field of Work
This field is extremely underfunded on all levels, resources are slim and needs are high in the community. But it is a very rewarding field and that is why it is important that more caring professionals are out there working! No sum of money amounts to the joy and satisfaction of helping people.
Overall Summary Statement
Overall the program is always evolving so that students are learning the most concurrent and relevant content in social services with regard to community needs. It teaches students to use Two-Eyed Seeing, to be non-judgmental and to support clients with unconditional regard. This program helped me develop a stronger understanding of challenges that are rooted in Canada's history and addressing current challenges with a holistic approach. Everyone who completes this program will graduate with a greater perspective regarding Indigenous inequities and realize the significance of decolonization and indigenization in Canada.
