Sustainable Development Goals icons for clean energy, innovation, and climate action
  • Heat the Shuniah Building on the Thunder Bay campus with biomass (woodchips from urban tree management operations).
  • Completed an Investment Grade Energy Study to identify solutions to achieve net-zero by 2040.
  • Operate 1376 solar panels across the Shuniah Building and ACE to support campus operations.

Water and Waste

Sustainable Development Goals icons for clean water, responsible consumption, and life on land and below water
  • Banned the sale of single use plastic water bottles and have 15 water refill stations.
  • Have saved over 250,000 sheets of paper by utilizing DocuSign since 2020.
  • Installed an onsite composter to divert food waste generated onsite from going to the landfill.
  • Established No Mow Zones along the McIntyre River to support riverbank stabilization.
  • Developed Low Impact Development sites (LIDs) to mitigate flooding and protect aquatic ecosystems from stormwater runoff.

Engagement

Sustainable Development Goals icons for health, reduced inequalities, and sustainable communities
  • Operate the Confederation College Community Garden with lots of gardening opportunities for students, staff, and community.
  • Annually participate in Spring Up to Clean Up – Thunder Bay’s spring waste collection initiative.
  • Staff participate in the Active Commute Challenge every June to support active transportation across Thunder Bay.
