Start Your Path in Trades, Technology, or Aviation

Confederation College’s Pre-Technology program helps you build the essential math, science, and technical skills needed for success in a wide range of post-secondary programs. Whether you're planning to enter a trades or technology/aviation field, this program provides the academic foundation and hands-on experience to get you there.

You’ll be placed in one of two streams based on your career goals:

  • Trades Stream – It is designed to upgrade your skills and knowledge for a variety of Confederation College trade programs including Carpentry and Renovation Techniques, Welding, Mechanical Techniques and Motive Power Techniques-Automotive. Courses cover topics such as applied math for trades, computers, trades science and writing strategies.
  • Technology/Aviation Stream – It is designed to upgrade your skills and knowledge for a variety of Confederation College programs including aviation, technology and technician programs. Class work includes applied math for technology, computers, technology studies or aviation studies and writing strategies.

Both streams offer focused coursework in applied math, computers, writing strategies, and either trades science or technology/aviation studies. It’s an ideal option if you're missing entrance requirements or just want a stronger start before entering your chosen field.

Admission Requirements for Domestic Students

  1. Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent) with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/College (U/C), or Open (O) preparation levels with Grade 12 English (C/U) Level.
  2. or successful completion of the Mature Student Assessment.
  3. or successful completion of the Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) or General Education Development Test (GED), prior to May 2024.
  4. or appropriate credits from the Academic and Career Entrance program (ACE).

Applied Math for Trades I

This course is designed to emphasize the secondary school mathematics required for entrance into a post-secondary trades or pre-apprenticeship program at the college level. After successful completion of this course, the student will be able to solve problems involving whole numbers, common fractions, decimals, percents, ratio and proportion, signed numbers, units of measurement, simple and composite plane geometry and simple and composite solid geometry.

In this course, students will develop the fundamental comprehension, technical, business, and oral communication skills required of employees in the trades. Upon completion of this course, you will be more adept at analyzing real-world writing scenarios; writing clearly and concisely; and communicating professionally.

Science 1 is designed to introduce students to various science topics that link directly to Technology and Trades. Through a combination of theory and practical experience, students will learn about kinematics, the laws of motion, force, simple machines, impulse, and momentum. Successful completion of this course will ensure students have the scientific foundation necessary to proceed with further studies in a more advanced program.

This course will explore thinking and will include both formal and informal logical reasoning, logical fallacies, an examination of conspiracy theories, and a brief introduction to mathematical logic.

In this course, students will be introduced to PC components and Windows Operating System GUI features and acquire the skills to use College communication and educational systems, including Blackboard, College Email, and public/personal directories. Students will be familiarized with Windows Operating System (OS) Command Line Interface (CLI) to interact with the computers by typing commands into a text-based interface to control the OS. Microsoft Office 365, specifically Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, will be delivered to students to perform tasks typically anticipated in the workplace.

This introductory course offers prospective Engineering students a hands-on opportunity to explore key topics in Advanced Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering. Through a project-based approach, students will gain practical experience in core areas of advanced manufacturing. In this course, students will be given hands-on familiarity with a low-cost Raspberry Pi computer, learn how to use it, program it with Python, connect it to sensors and motors, and use it with the Internet of Things (IoT). With an emphasis on Microsoft Office 365, students will acquire intermediary skills in operating Microsoft Excel and Access.

This course will provide students with an introduction to the history of colonization of Indigenous communities in Canada. Contemporary Indigenous community issues within Northwestern Ontario (NWO) and Canada will be examined. Students will explore the unique socio-political relationships between Canada and Indigenous peoples with an emphasis on colonial, legal and political issues. With a broader understanding of the context of colonization, students will analyze contemporary relationships and efforts towards renewed relationships and reconciliation.

Students will have the opportunity to establish a base of aviation knowledge which they will use in both the classroom and flight simulators in Aviation Studies 1 and 2. This base of knowledge will introduce students to the topics required in a Transport Canada Private Pilot ground school. This course is recommended for students who are considering Aviation Flight Management as a future program.

In this course, students will learn from a mixture of interactive classroom lectures and hands-on labs. This course will expand on the knowledge covered in Aviation Studies 1 and introduce air law, flight preparation, and use of checklists. This course will put into practice some of the basic elements of flight including radio communication, engine starting, taxiing, and basic flight maneuvers. This course is recommended for students who are considering Aviation Flight Management as a future program.

Applied Math for Technology I provides a foundation in mathematics for students in engineering technology and technician programs. Applied Math for Technology II is a continuation of its pre-requisite course MA115. Students will further develop mathematical problem-solving techniques as applied to the different technical areas. After successful completion of this course, the student will be able to solve applications involving factoring, algebraic fractions, functions, graphing, geometry, trigonometry, and vectors.

Tech Studies VI - Aviation/Pre-Flight Focus II

In this course, students will learn from a mixture of interactive classroom lectures and hands-on labs. This course will expand on the knowledge covered in Aviation Studies 1 and introduce air law, flight preparation, and use of checklists. This course will put into practice some of the basic elements of flight including radio communication, engine starting, taxiing, and basic flight maneuvers. This course is recommended for students who are considering Aviation Flight Management as a future program.

Tech Studies VII - Civil/Carpentry Focus

21 hours

In this course, students will explore and discover material properties through a mixture of interactive classroom lectures and hands-on labs. An exploration of natural materials such as wood, soil and water and their applications with respect to engineering, trades and natural resources. After the successful completion of this 7 week course, students will have the background necessary to proceed with further study in Civil Engineering, Carpentry Renovations and Techniques, and Natural Resource Study programs.

Tech Studies VIII - Electronics/Circuity Focus

21 hours

In this course, students will explore and discover the fundamentals of electronics and circuits components. After successful completion of this 7 week course, students will have the background necessary to proceed with further study in Electrical Engineering Technology and Electronics Engineering technology.

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Enhance mathematical literacy by solving technical problems using arithmetic, fractions, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  2. Solve technical problems and perform technical tasks by applying principles of mathematics and science.
  3. Develop study skill strategies required for success in post-secondary programs.
  4. Develop strategies for ongoing personal and career development to enhance work performance in multidisciplinary workspaces.
  5. Select, use and maintain machinery, tools, and equipment safely and competently as required in various technical fields.
  6. Use various computer applications appropriately and in a manner relevant to technical workspaces.
  7. Make an active and constructive contribution to group projects and discussions.
