Dr. Tia Cooney

Role & Responsibilities

In her current role as a Professor in the HBScN program, Dr. Cooney develops and revises curriculum, teaches lecture courses and assists in accreditation processes.

Professional Background

Dr. Tia Cooney completed the Compressed BScN Program at Lakehead University in 2005, a Master of Science of Nursing Degree from York University in 2007, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from The College of St. Scholastica in 2011. She has worked nearly 20 years as a perinatal nurse and in community health nursing and has enjoyed every minute of it. She has also worked as a sexual assault and domestic violence treatment nurse, as a nurse in the COVID-19 Assessment Centre and Vaccination Clinic, and as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Women's and Children's Programs. She continues to develop her knowledge and skills as a nurse by working casually within home and community care services and in healthcare informatics. Her research interests are led by her experiences in the field, including quality improvement projects, student experiences within nursing programs, and perspectives of healthcare providers working within various healthcare settings. She enjoys engaging in both qualitative and quantitative research methods and peer-reviewing journal articles, textbooks and clinical practice guidelines.

Teaching

Dr. Cooney has been teaching in the baccalaureate nursing program since 2010, first in the Collaborative BScN Program with Lakehead University and now in the Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program at Confederation College. Her teaching expertise is in perinatal care, community care, pediatrics, ethics, research and lifespan development. She has thoroughly enjoyed being a Clinical Instructor for 4th year Preceptorship students as students can really demonstrate their knowledge, skill and judgement in these 1:1 settings.

Community Involvement

Dr. Cooney currently volunteers at the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Network with Sunnybrook Hospital as a Peer Facilitator, as a Patient and Family Advisor at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, a Bioethics Team Member at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and a Perinatal Coalition member within the District of Thunder Bay.
