How/Why Did I Become a Teacher

I became a teacher after being a social worker in the community for over 12 years because I wanted to pursue an opportunity that would continue to allow me to observe human growth and potential.

What I Like Most About Teaching

I love that teaching still affords me the opportunity to learn. My classroom is set up to be a collaborative learning environment where we all learn from one another.

My Educational Background & Qualifications

My post-secondary education began with the Social Service Worker program at Confederation College. I pursued my HBSW and MSW at Lakehead University. I am a certified clinical traumatologist with the Trauma Institute of Canada and a Compassion Fatigue Specialist. I have also attended training on mindfulness and self-compassion.

Relevant Experience in the Field

I have worked in a variety of settings including children's and adult mental health, the youth justice sector and family violence/trauma.

My Hobbies & Other Interests

I enjoy downhill skiing, travelling and spending time with my two children.

My insight and words of advice regarding this program

Students who are interested in pursuing a career in the helping professions need to know how their values, attitudes and past experiences affect their thinking and behaviour. Students who are open-minded and willing to consider alternative perspectives and opinions will flourish in this field.

The helping professions offer many possibilities for those who are interested in making a difference in the lives of people. A career in social service work prepares learners to work with a diverse population that includes children to the elderly. The helping professions work directly with individuals who may be adversely affected by violence, poverty, mental illness, addiction or other social problems. The opportunities that exist are endless!
