The Province of Ontario created the specialist high skills major (SHSM) program to help meet the needs, interests, and strengths of all students, engaging them in learning and better preparing them for graduation and beyond.

Confederation College has created the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Award and made it available to students entering directly from high school and who have a SHSM designation on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Our SHSM Award is designed to help you continue exploring your interests and set your own path.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Must be a Grade 12 high school student completing one of the following Specialist High Skills Majors: Business; Construction; Manufacturing; Hospitality and Tourism; Aviation and Aerospace; Arts & Culture; Health & Wellness; Justice, Community Safety and Emergency Services; Mining; Transportation; Environment
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Based on full-time registration in a diploma or certificate program for the upcoming academic year

Get up to $1,000 per semester toward your tuition at Confederation College and $1,000 when you graduate!

If you’re a student enrolled in one of the following programs:

  • Aviation Technician — Aircraft Maintenance
  • Civil Engineering Technician
  • Forestry Technician: Ecosystem Management
  • Environmental Technician: Water Resource Management
  • Electrical Engineering Technician Program
  • Mechanical Engineering Technician

Canerector Scholars will also have access to unique opportunities to meet and learn from industry professionals, as well as custom clothing to wear in the classroom and on the job.

If you’re a student enrolled in one of the following programs:

School of Health, Negahneewin & Community Services

  • Practical Nursing (2 years)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (4 years)
  • Dental Hygiene (3 years)
  • Medical Radiation Technologist (3 years)

School of Engineering Technology, Trades and Aviation

  • Aerospace Manufacturing Technology (3 years)
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology (3 years)
  • Electrical Engineering Technology (3 years)

You could be eligible for a bursary that will cover up to $5,000 tuition — for every year of your program!

BURSARY GUIDELINES

  • All recipients must be citizens or permanent residents of Canada and attending a post-secondary institution in Canada.
  • Bursaries will be awarded based on financial need and personal circumstance, often in conjunction with a student’s effort and commitment to his/her studies.
  • Preference may be given to those who have no other avenues of funding or supports in their pursuit of post secondary education.
  • Bursaries awarded are to be applied against tuition, school fees and books only.
  • Students must be enrolled in a full-time course of study.
  • Students enrolled in graduate or Ph.D. programs are not eligible.
