How/Why I Become a Teacher?

My philosophy of education is that all students can learn the required skills needed to be successful and productive individuals.

I believe that each student has their own unique way of learning, of thinking, and of seeing the world; therefore, my role as an educator is to assist each student to achieve their goals by supporting their way of learning and to help them to think critically through their own worldview. As an effective educator, I use a variety of teaching techniques, methods and strategies, to reach all learners so they can achieve their highest potential.

My classroom is a supportive, welcoming environment where students can feel empowered to share their thoughts and opinions, answer questions without fear of embarrassment, and to feel safe as they expand their knowledge.

My Educational Background & Qualifications

  • Certified Teacher with the Ontario College of Teachers (2001)
  • Bachelor of Science Degree - Education
  • Masters of Education Degree - Indigenous Education
  • Special Education Specialist

My Relevant Experience in the Field

  • I have over twenty years of teaching experience ranging from elementary school, high school and post-secondary.
  • I taught for nearly ten years in a remote First Nations Cree community in northern Manitoba.
  • I have been at Confederation College since 2010 working in a number of different capacities such as student success, student accessibility, student advising, and as one of the first Indigenous Student Navigators in APIWIN.

My Hobbies & Other Interests

  • I enjoy cheering on the Toronto Maple Leafs, collecting hockey cards and action figures, hunting and fishing with my son, shopping with my two daughters, and simply spending quality time with my family.
