Tracheostomy

This theory and lab course will give the RPN the knowledge, skill and judgement in performing daily tracheostomy care for the stable and predictable adult client in the clinical/home setting. Students will learn to provide safe and effective tracheostomy care on a stable system by: assessing proper oxygenation, learning how to suction a tracheostomy, change tracheostomy ties and the inner cannula, ensure proper oxygenation and humidity during and after tracheostomy care, and be able to intervene in an emergency situation. This course is of importance for those RPNs who wish to upgrade their skills to meet current nursing standards. Prerequisite: Active practicing RPN license.
