Radiation Safety

In Radiation Safety the student will apply knowledge of x-ray energy absorption discussed in Radiographic Equipment Operation II to safe radiation practices for patients, technologists, staff, caregivers and the general public. These skills will be applied in Clinical Lab where the student will make decisions regarding the balance of radiation safety and image quality using the ALARA and AHARA principles of radiation management. The biological effects of radiation on cells, tissues, organs and body systems will be discussed. Students will learn the somatic, genetic, acute and delayed effects of radiation exposure. The student will also apply knowledge of the calculation of patient entrance exposure doses. Linked to current CAMRT competency profile found on www.camrt.ca website.
