Issues and Interventions for Families

This introductory course provides students with insight into addictions, family violence and child abuse and neglect. These are some of the most difficult challenges which threaten the health of children and families Students will discuss the nature and scope of these issues and will examine the root causes, symptoms as they relate to marginalization, colonization, and the residue of family and cultural disruption from the residential school era. Students will learn to recognize and respond to these family issues with appropriate strength based assessment, initial interventions, and referral to culturally relevant programs in the community. Case studies and analysis of culturally relevant programs and strategies for intervention and healing will be reviewed so that students feel confident when working with these issues in the field.
