Skilled Helper

This course examines the importance of personal awareness and self-reflection in the development of healthy workers in human services. Students will examine their own values, ethics and beliefs in the process of understanding their identity, strengths and limitations in relation to their roles as helpers. Students will be encouraged to explore their own history as it relates to colonialism, oppression, wellness and healing and to reflect on how that history impacts their delivery of human services. In addition, students will begin to explore their role in the delivery of anti-oppressive social services to vulnerable populations. The course will emphasize the importance of developing and maintaining a self-reflective practice and in developing a personal wellness plan as foundations for ongoing personal and professional development.
