Human Services Through the Indigenous Lens

This foundational course will introduce students to the social work framework and practices required to work effectively in the human services field. It will review the ideological foundations and values of social work and the roles and responsibilities of individuals working in the helping field. It will critique and review various theories of social work, focusing on strength based and anti-oppressive practices which are best suited to work with Indigenous peoples. A strong component of this course will be a review of the history of social work and helping practices with Indigenous peoples and communities. Finally, students will become familiar with Indigenous, strength based and anti-oppressive practices that have been developed to support the cultural needs of Indigenous children, families and communities.
