Fostering Identity and Belonging

This course will explore the relationship between identity, belonging and mental wellness. Specifically, what happens when someone has not had the opportunity to accept their identity and/or relation to the world. Throughout the entirety of the course, Learners will have the opportunity to reflect on and engage with their relationships with Spirit, Creation, Land, Water, Cosmos, Ancestors, Community, Culture, and Self in reference to where they are today. This assessment and reflections will reinforce the importance of Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing, understood and supported through Culture. Culture plays an integral role in fostering one’s identity in relation to their position in the world. Relationships and Kinship are recognized as a key component in Culture – both in everyday practice and in ceremony – which plays a key role in understanding where someone belongs within society. This course will explore historical factors that have shaped current relationships within communities, but more-so will focus on how Indigenous communities have restored community relationships and personal identity through cultural practices. All in which will demonstrate to Learners how to create inclusive spaces that foster identity, belonging and wholistic well-being.
