Mental Wellness and Diverse Identities

This course explores the specific impacts of colonization on identity, gender and sexuality within Indigenous communities and introduces Learners to the related issue of mental wellness within diverse populations. The course will discuss the history of diverse identities, the impacts of homophobia and transphobia on mental wellness, and systemic barriers for 2SLGBTQQIA+ and racialized folks within the mental health system. The course will consider diverse experiences within the healthcare sector and how it has impacted individual relations with identity in direct relation to mental health. An important focus of the course is Indigenous ways of knowing and doing, including returning to traditional concepts of diverse identities to strengthen mental wellness within community. The course will equip Learners with skills to advocate for diverse populations within the mental health sector and address related systemic barriers.
