Introduction to Crisis Support
In this course the students will study a variety of theories, techniques, procedures, and practices that may be used to help them to deal, on a short-term and immediate basis, with a crisis situation involving family, friends, co-workers and others with whom they ordinarily do not have a counselling or therapeutic relationship. The students will examine the dynamics of, and intervention strategies for, a variety of situations including physical & sexual assault and abuse, suicidal intent, post-traumatic stress disorder, and bereavement, grief, separation, and loss, so that they may be better able to give support to those in crisis situations in order to help reduce the risk of psychological and/or physical harm, re-establish immediate coping, and assist in finding helping resources. The students will practice the application of the theories and skills to real-life situations through the use of role plays, cases, exercises, and tests.
