Building Sustainable Communities

This is an introduction to community economic development, with a particular focus on issue of sustainability. Students will discuss such topics as resource management, co-management, joint ventures, and the sustainable use of available resources including water, land, wildlife, minerals, and timber. Focus will be on the changing role of the provincial government's regulation of Aboriginal uses of resources and traditional and treaty rights to use, manage, and maintain resources. Students will be encouraged to think of community development in broad, principled terms strongly linked to principles of self-determination and accountability.
