Barriers in CYC Practice

Child and Youth Care recognizes the most influential tool in the therapeutic process is ‘self', in relationship to vulnerable and high risk children and youth. However using 'self' effectively, in the therapeutic process, requires a thorough and ongoing exploration of who we are in relationship to others. The notion of 'self', particularly as it relates to the barriers that exist in relational engagement with youth and colleagues, will be closely examined. Each student will identify and explore a current relational practice barrier they are facing, as it relates to triggering, reactivity and the development of unhelpful patterns of behaviour in relational CYC practice. To do so, plans for professional development will be created and presented, including a plan for change within specific practice settings. I strong strength based approach to self assessment is used with a focus upon the concept of resilience.
