Exceptional Children

This course is a continuum of developmental studies and explores the mental health and psychopathology of childhood and adolescent. Students will engage in a critical examination of the major paradigms, the DSM-5 categorical system, the role of trauma and context in development and the CYC approach to abnormality. Students will examine social and cultural assumptions of what constitutes “normal” vs. “pathological” behavior, cognition, and emotion. Issues related to family, peers, school, community and developmental trajectories will also be highlighted, along with risk and protective factors across childhood and adolescence.
