Intergenerational Trauma and Aggression in Young People

In this course, students will examine and practice culturally informed life-space crisis intervention in escalated situations with Indigenous and marginalized young people. This course focuses upon developing an awareness of self, with respect to intuitive reactions to aggression, as well as an understanding of the developmental needs of youth with trauma histories. Intergenerational trauma and colonialism serve as cornerstones to understanding how aggression develops in Indigenous young people struggling to self-regulate. The learner will be introduced to ways of creating opportunities for meaningful cultural experiences outside of the crisis incident. The course also emphasizes the need for strength-based resiliency-focused life space crisis intervention, in order to reduce the need for physical intervention.
