Understanding Suicide as a Colonial Disorder

The social context of suicide in Indigenous communities includes dislocation, colonialism and institutionalized racism. In this course, the learner will explore an Indigenous meaning of suicide as a sign of collective suffering due to intergenerational trauma and colonization. This view will be contrasted with a West-ern view of suicide, as being a sign of individual internal psychopathology. The impact of colonialism upon the rates of suicide within LGBTTQ2 youth communities will also be explored. Discussion will focus on the use of protective factors, strengths and a sense of resilience, as well as the need for advocacy for services that are relational, community-centered, community-driven, and culturally appropriate. The learner will also receive Safe Talk training.
